No lactation consultants????

My doctor says that the hospital I delivered my daughter at no longer has lactation consultants! I won't be able to get proper help in the hospital and that I will have to go to a separate clinic after we get out to get help... The only way I will get help is if I luck out and my nurse has a specialty in it!

And they say breast it best.... SOOOO happy I'm supported

Oh... I didn't end up getting help last time because I was back in and out of surgery the whole time I was there and barely saw the ward nurses or my doctor to even be able to ask questions...

I would try to read up on breastfeeding then. There's a thread somewhere around here where someone recommended a book recently, but I can't remember what it was.

Also, I've heard great things about La Leche League and will be looking into my own UK branch.

Do you have a baby cafe near you? You can drop in before you're due to get advice as well as going afterwards. It's like a drop in centre for breastfeeding advice.

Hire a Doula who has a background in lactation.

Yes, The le leche league is a great site that is very unbiased and has lots of great, positive support. Did you nurse with your daughter? If you have already bf then you probably have a better chance.

I bf my daughter until she was 8 months and weaned herself... But with my hospital stay there was a lot of stress and I ended up suffering pnd because of the struggle, I felt very inadequate...

I would definitely start looking into LLL now if you feel you'll be faced with initial problems. They're not just for mums that are currently BF'ing - it says on the site that they're also there for you if you're pregnant and planning on BF'ing. Best of luck! x

All the advice the other ladies gave you is great... Just want to add though, that while a lactation consultant is good to have - YOU CAN DO THIS without them!

Most nurses should be able to help you initially.... and after that, look in books, ask friends, come on here, or go to LLL like the others have said!

It sucks that they don't have one on hand at the hospital, but don't let it discourage you, thats all I'm saying!
