Planned weight loss in pregnancy

Hello, I was wondering if anybody has been advised to try and lose weight while they are pregnant? I am trying to lose weight while ttc but am still really overweight so if I do get pregnant soonish, I am still hoping that I might lose some weight while I am pregnant. Nothing stupid, just eating healthily, maybe slimming world style or something, which I can only imagine will make me lose weight. I can't see this doing any harm if I am eating plenty, but it's now all good stuff and so weight loss is inevitible - if that makes sense?

I hope this makes sense!

x

was also wondering this, glad you asked

I know what you mean, and i was thinking the same

so eating healthily etc can only contribute to a healthy baby and a healthy mummy after i assume

worth a try

Nothing wrong with eating healthy... as long as you are getting your recommended number of calories per day. Its really NEVER healthy to LOSE weight while pregnant. Of course - some women do - with MS or whatever - but if you are LOSING weight, it means you are burning more calories than your body is consuming, which is NOT safe for baby.

On the other hand - if you are losing FAT and not pounds - thats a different story. SO - you may not actually be losing pounds, but you will technically be slimming up.
Does that make sense?

I mean - if you are eating healthy - then you won't gain TOO much weight.

I know my cousin started out pregnancy WAY overweight. She only gained about 10 lbs total during her pregnancy. Once she gave birth she was actually about 5 pounds UNDER her pre-pregnancy weight.

What is "really overweight" for you? Weight loss during pregnancy can be done (my sister in law was morbidly obese - almost 350lbs when she conceived - and was told to lose weight even while pregnant) so it can be right in certain circumstances.

I would recommend consulting a registered dietician that specializes in prenatal nutrition as well as speaking with your doctor.

Thanks Hun, yeah unfortunately I am not far off that weight, only about 30lb lighter so I definitely think there isn't much harm in reducing my weight. I just worked out I would need 2900 calories a day just to maintain my weight and that's not healthy so surely it's better i give my body the right nutrition, by eating plenty but ultimately less than the 2900, which automatically means losing weight. I am not talking about a restricted diet here.
It's really useful hearing about ur sis in law. I guess when I get pregnant I will be referred to a dietician who will help me? xx

Its perfectly possible to loose weight whilst pregnant and remain 100% healthy, especially being on the heavier side. You should easily be able to cut your calories right down but maintain a healthy, balanced diet that will give you and baby everything you need but allow you to loose fat weight. Of course exercise is a big part of any diet plan and certain exercise thats good for pregnancy is also good for weight loss, such as walking and swimming. I was overweight when I fell pregnant and have now lost over 5 stone. This was NOT planned, it was due to hyperemesis but I continued to take vitamins and minerals and baby looks perfectly healthy and I feel better than I did whilst overweight despite spd and still being sick. All my bloods are normal, GTT normal, my skin and hair look great and so on. So even though I havent managed to eat healthily because Ive been so sick we are still fine!

You should speak to your doctor about this as I was planning on carrying on with slimming world when pregnant as its the one plan which allows pregnant women to follow it but my doctor said under no circumstances was I to follow a diet just eat healthy.

The thing is, if you usually eat a load of crap which is say, double the amount of calories and fat you actually need and when you become pg you start eating healthy and low fat and the right amount of calories you will loose weight and your baby will more likely get better nutrition than if you were eating the same stuff on your pre-pg diet.

These are some of the things you should be mentally prepared about.

Join slliming world and once your preg just speek to your midwife.

All a dietician will do is tell you is the same things wev all been told at the doctors lots of times hun. My mam is over weight and got sent to a dietican when she was pregnant with my brother and refused to go. She knew what healthy eating is so there was no point in going.

Just to say slimming world isent a diet, its an eating plan. You can eat as much of the good stuff as you want, and only limit the things that are bad for you.
