How do you find a doctor?

I don't even know what kind of doctor to be looking for... OBGYN? should I get a midwife? I feel like it would be kind of a crapshoot to just call random offices and ask if they're taking patients... how do you know who's good? I'm sure if I asked around I could get many different opinions about the same doctors based on personal experience and I'm sure they'd contradict one another.

I asked my GP for a recommendation. She has always referred me to fantastic specialists, and I've known her since I was 6 years old, so I knew I could trust anyone she recommended.

my problem is I just moved here a year ago and haven't been able to find a decent GP. the one I found that does take patients, quite frankly, is useless for anything other than a prescription refill. he was busy the other day but another doctor saw me, who was actually quite impressive. he's not taking patients but he booked me an ultrasound and the OBGYN just called this morning that apparently he referred me to. I'm quite happy with him, I'll see if I can get on a waitlist.
