Yes - for the following reasons:

more privacy, as the water protects you from onlookers and unwanted touching/VEs/any other type of interference
it can make 5cms-fully dilated go more quickly than on dry land
it eases the pain of contractions
some say that the transition from amniotic sac to outside world is smoother, as the water is like being in the waters

Re. turning red - most new pools have an option for you to buy the accessories pack, which includes a sieve for scooping horried stuff out! I've seen lots of pics in books which have clear water - it would be normal and nothing to worry about infection-wise - if it became a problem, mws would tell you to get out and you still hopefully would have had some benefit.

Re. drowning baby - they won't be stimulated to take a breath underwater, as it'll be body temp and like the womb - and you won't cut the cord until they are out of the water. You can lift the baby up immediately, or if the cord isn't long enough, you would (I assume) be helped to stand if the cord isn't long enough.

I think it sounds like a fab option and can't wait for my waterbirth (god willing!).

yes yes yes!!! i almost had a water birth 2 weeks ago.. just had to get out right at the very end as Rubys heart rate was dropping... but honestly, it is the way to go! the water is so soothing, and i agree that it increased my privacy too. there were a few floaties in the water, but nothing big or gross, and the water defo wasnt bright red at all, the pool i used was so big that i think it would have taken a huge amount of blood to do that.. as the pool i used was like a giant bath, the midwives also partially emptied it and refilled it every so often to keep the temp up, so i guess this also served to get rid of some of the gunk too, but honestly, there wasnt a lot.
my advice is defo give it a try, it was an amazing experience for us, i just wish that i had been able to actually give birth to her in the pool, as the pain was way mre intense once i had to get out. Good luck!!

I really wanted one with my first, I looked into it loads and would reccomend someone have one after I attended a friends birth and she was in the pool. Sadly I didnt get mine as I had to be hooked to a heart beat monitor and then baby needed a probe on his head to keep an eye on his HB as it kept dipping.
Not decided for this one yet, Im wanting a home birth and not sure I can be bothered with hiring/buying a small pool....plus I plan to play on the Wii Ive been promised for christmas and I want to watch films Im recording on Sky+ and I cant have the channel changer in a pool....

Anyhow, water wont go completely icky and baby will NOT drown

I'm in 2 minds now tbh , I really wanted a water birth before but had this whole vision of it being nice for me & fob to be together & him helping me then catching baby as he came out but as he's left me for someone else that bit sorta sinks if you get me. So being in the pool with my cousin standing at the side ( my now birth partner) i dunno if that kinda does it for me, I guess at the moment im thinking go with the flow of what happens & ill decide at the time. I'll prob want it when there, i know i was desp for a bath during labour with my 1st but wasnt allowed
