NCT Swine Flu Row

I thought some might be interested in the latest 'story' on Swine Flu relating to pregnancy.....

Today the NCT are being accused of scaremongering regarding H1N1. This is all cased around a woman's immune system being suppressed during pregnancy so her body does reject the foetus.

The Telegraph leads the way....

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/sw...nd-babies.html

The Observer reports the row......

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009...u-women-babies

The BBC reports a less sensational and more balanced view of the information....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8157755.stm

I personally wont be stopping TTC. The message is not to do so but to take sensible precautions to avoid raising the risk to you and your family -

HAND WASHING being the key!! I dont think we can underestimate the importance of good hand hygiene. I am always shocked when I vist public toilets at how many grown women leave without washing their hands.... BASICS......

What makes me REALLY REALLY angry about this is the lack of information that has been available to me.

I'm 37 weeks pg, a teacher at a high school and on Tuesday learned that 2 kids had been diagnosed.

There is no support for pregnant women (high risk, according to everyone!) to be off work, so if I had decided to stay at home for the last two days of term, I would have had to start my mat leave early, as they would have forced it - insgtead of starting on 3rd August (my edd).

And when I rang my midwifery team they were unable to officially advise me as they had been given no official advice to pass on.

Ditto the doctor - who could only give me his personal opinion.

So much for advice and support for pregnant women. I was (and still am) fuming about these stories, as they highlight just how inept the people concerned are about actually giving out advice or information.

PP!!

It's crap isnt it LindyP. We are getting conflicting info ALL over the place and they wonder why people are panicking about it. So did you still go in so you could start your mat leave when your LO is born over the hols? You would think they would exercise some common sense...
On a side issue I am quite relieved the summer hols are here now as that's me and OH away from crowed schools full of teens with questionable hand washing skills!

I too am really concerned about conflicting advice. I work in a school with a confirmed swine flu case and really don't know whether to stay away for the last few days or whether this is just me panicking. I rang doctor three times last week and he did not get back to me. I finally got to speak to my nurse (on my forth phone call) who told me to go into work as normal. This was just her personal opinion though.
My headteacher hasn't even mentioned to me the fact that I am at greater risk, although a number of staff members have come up and asked if I should be in school. Arhhh! Just don't know what to do for the best. I'm one of these people that never take time off work but would hate to think I am putting my baby at risk??

i'm a school teacher and we had 2 confirmed cases within the school in the last week with a suspected 50!. the head was great tho and said i could stay at home if i wanted and it wouldn't affect my maternity start date. i decided to go in but i kept out of the end of year assembly and went home early when i could. the kids were great and didn't come close when they felt ill and just sent a note to say they were feeling ill.
i have always kept hand gel in my desk but now keep it in my handbag as well. i am really glad that holidays are here and i dont have to worry over the next 7 weeks.
i am going back for 2 weeks if i can in september but know i'll be completely supported with working away from children in my office if i need to. (only doing paperwork!!)

If it were me I'd take the last few days off if that doesnt make your maternity kick in. I cant remember what point it's after but I'm sure it's not so soon.

We didnt have any confirmed cases at work but my hubby's school had 4 staff off and dozens of kids...
