Stupid Swine flu

My SL had a baby girl on Friday and her MW came round today and informed her that there was swine flu on the labour ward and the hospital in general so to keep an eye out and not to bring baby out for a few weeks, I went up the hospital to sit with my niece while my brother was in with SL so sat on the labour ward for a about 3 hours.

So thats

New mum
Newborn
4 year old
pregnant woman

all possible exposed to swine flu!

as well as everyone else in hospital!

Great

I wouldn't worry too much. If you do get sick tamiflu is suggested for pregnant ladies. Swine flu tends to be relatively mild compared to other seasonal flu's and I would personally rather get it now as new viruses often mutate into stronger forms.

Don't let it get in the way of your wedding etc. Commonsense, good handwashing and telling sick people to stay at home is the best way of managing it. Good luck.

Just heard some government scare mongering on the radio so googled 'pregnancy swine flu' and came up with this from the NHS:

"Does swine flu pose special risks in pregnant women?

During pregnancy, you may have an increased risk of complications from any type of flu, especially in the second and third trimester.

Can I take antiviral drugs if I am pregnant?

Yes, on the advice of a doctor. The Department of Health has purchased Relenza, an inhaled antiviral drug that treats flu without reaching the developing fetus.

An expert group reviewed the risk of antiviral treatment in pregnancy, which is extremely small - much smaller than the risk posed by the symptoms of swine flu."

having had a nasty bout of flu last november which lead me to developing COPD I am NOT keen to repeat the process! I would be very high risk if I contracted swine flu as my respiritory system wouldnt manage. Even with that Im not too concerned, if I start to feel ickky I will go to the doctors but Im hoping I will be able to avoid it until vaccines are avaliable.
Its been turned into a bit of a scare mongerer, I am told for healthy people it is less severe than 'normal' flu and only a very small number of higher risk (small children, those with asthma/copd etc) people are likely to require treatment/hospitilisation.

Don't worry, the only risk flu poses to a pregnant woman over anyone else is that of having a fever. Increased temperature, as you will know already, isn't good for the baby. So, if you had a temp, you'd act on it straight away. Neither the baby nor you is at any greater risk than that, with the exception of those suffering with other severe illnesses.

Would you guys take the vaccine if they offered it to you? I don't know if I would, what if there are side effects?

I definately would. I have a flu vaccination now after having flu so badly.
If you are otherwise healthy then maybe not but as I have the COPD as well as being pregnant I hope to get a vaccine as soon as they are avaliable.

Im not sure whether i would take it. I think if i wasn't pregnant then i defiantly wouldn't take tamiflu as atm it seems mild and id rather let my body fight it but like other people said its the temperature that's most dangerous to my bump. As of today though i defiantly haven't picked it up as symptoms come up in 7 days
