Don't panic. I have friends that swear by these, but GF who has a 2 month old hates them and uses little socks instead, because she said they stay on better!
Always a back up plan

They are supposed to be used to stop the baby scratching themselves but I see them as a total waste of money and never bothered with them with my other 2.
Just keep their nails short and you should have no problems with scratches!
The problem is that you aren't supposed to clip their fingernails for at least 10 days because the nails are so soft you can easily rip the nailbed and baby can get an infection. My son was 10 days overdue and came out with talons and scratches on his face. Scratch mitts were a necessity for us.
After the 10 dys were up and we could trim his nails, we didn't use the scratch mitts as much.
They're a pretty cheap item. In Canada, ours were a buck or so, so it's not too bad to have a pair, just in case. I would actually have those in the hospital bag. We needed them right away.

Boots do the best ever scratch mitts as they actually stay on. They are 2 in a pack and i think they are £2.

I've tried loads of mitts cause niamh was tube fed for 10 weeks and she had to wear mitts 24/7, it was only boots ones that stayed on.
