Flu Vaccines

Now don't get me wrong, I'm more worried about who will win Britain's Got Talent than I am about Massmediahysteria, er sorry, I mean Swine Flu.

However I'm wondering what the situation is regarding the safety of vaccines to pregnant women? Is it safe to be inocculated when you're expecting?

Nope it is not.

Well, I suppose it depends on the whole "do the benefits outweigh the risk?" thing. I wasn't allowed my flu jab last November when I found out I was pregnant. I think there's a window in which you can/can't have it like you're allowed after 12 weeks or something but I think it depends on the individual case and the experience of the doctor/midwife you see because they all told me something different!

They don't have a swine flu vaccination at the moment do they? But I don't know anything about the tablets, the tamiflu stuff.

They had this on the news this morning and said that the Tamiflu tablets are not recommended for pregnant women but that after 12 weeks it would have to be a decision between the patient and doc that was treating. I guess it depends how severe it is if you get it and how much of a risk it will pose to you.

The only real problem with getting the flu when pregnant is the fever, which you should be able to control with fluids and paracetamol.

I had cold/flu during my 1st tri, and doctors didnt seem worried about baby being harmed, but it sucked being ill and unable to take any medicine apart from the occasional paracetemol.

They allow you to have the flu shot as long as you're through first trimester here in Canada...

My first time having it & I'll never go without it again. Didn't get sick all winter, and I am always the first to catch whatever everyone else has! Was congested in February but had my flu shot in late Nov/early Dec.

flu shot is allowed all through pregnancy in the states and no I did not get one. I am not too worried about SF... we have medical technology and an excellent hospital should anyone get sick and need it.
