pregnant and flying...

hey girlies (and any daddys who may be lurking)...

I was just wondering if any of you had any problems flying whilst pregnant (in a plane, im not crazy...yet) or trying to get travel insurance whilst pregnant?? Im 7 weeks atm and due to be going on holiday mid to end of June when I am about 15 weeks and as this is my first im not sure what to expect. It's going to be four flights in total (two there, two back) and i'm worried that travel insurance companies arent going to want to touch me with a barge pole

i flew to florida in 2002 when i was 12 weeks pregnant and when i came back i was 14 weeks i had no problems at all with my insurance, or the flight,i just made sure i wore the special flight socks, walked about as much as i could, and drank plenty of water during the 9hour flight. you should be fine, you should be over the sicky stage and not too big bump wise that you are uncomfortable-have a wonderful holiday!!

I've flown to Scotland and back twice already, I'm flying there again in a couple of weeks and then to Cyprus at the end of May when I'll be about 24 weeks - I don't think travel insurance providers have a problem with it unless there are any reasons for concern before you fly (and I assume you'd have to disclose them at the time you take out the insurance). My OH sorted ours out but didn't mention any problems. For our flights to Cyprus I'm getting a letter from my midwife saying that it's safe for me to fly (airlines don't ask you for one until later in the pregnancy but I want to be prepared just in case I look huge and they think I look further along) x

My flights shouldnt be as long as that and I have a few hours in between to walk around!! What are these flight socks though? to prevent DVT? I may consider investing in a pair of them!! Hopefully the worst aspect will be being totally shattered (especially as the flights home begin at a spritely 4.30am)...I just wondered if it was risky or not.
My sister in law flew last year a few weeks after having a MC and she had alot of problems when she landed abroad. I dont want to risk the same thing

I am actually flying to Turkey so should be similar flight times to your Cyprus journey. Although I wont be as far along as you, will you let me know if you have any problems with the flight crew or anything? xx

I flew from morocco back to the uk which is 4 hours when I was 25 weeks pregnant.I didnt have any problems getting insurance. The flight attendants didnt even mention it. I asked to be seated close to a toilet though lol that way your close enough and you can stand up without being in the way of anyone. The funniest thing was landing,it must of woke salim up because he didnt stop kicking for ages afterwards loll

I have flown UK-Switzerland throughout my pregnancy, its only a 2hr flight but I've had no probs. For the first few flights I checked I was still covered by my annual poilcy - no probs. That has finished now and as most of my vacations are with family and my luggage is worth peanuts I know don't have travel insurance I do have swiss health insurance and that covers me within Europe.

Anyway I flew at 7.5, 9, 16, 22, 23 and will be flying at 26.5 and 28 weeks. I have had no problems on any flight, I always get an aisle seat so I can get to the loo if a need to pee. So far nobody has noticed I'm pregnant. Although as somebody mentioned - I did get a few kicks after landing at 23wks!

I'm meant to have a letter for my flight at 28wks written less than 5 days before I fly.. I have a letter from my doc but that will be 2 weeks old. I should find one in the UK too however that could be difficult so I am tempted to just wear a hoodie and take a week or 2 off if they notice which I don't think they will.

I flew at 24wks to Spain and all was fine, insurance company were great as long as the pg had been ok to date, which it had. No one even mentioned it at the airport or on the plane and I didn't either. No need unless there was a specific worry. I did ask if I needed a letter from midwife or GP and they replied "if you would feel better, but not necessary".

Would maybe suggest the following which I think has been mentioned above;

Ensure keep moving your ankles you're more prone to DVT whilst pg
Try and get an aisle seat for toilet trips
Take a couple of bags with you if still feeling nauseous

My baby did kick a lot during take off and landing which made me think whether that was a good or bad thing, but I am sure it just likes holidays like its parents (fx).

Enjoy....xxx.

I flew to England at 14 weeks pregnant. I didn't need travel insurance because I was born in the UK.

Flying at 14 weeks is no problem as far as the pregnancy goes, but I personally would never do it again. It was totally exhausting flying by my self. That mixed with staff watching me try and lug 2 suitcases on the scales whilst being very obviously pregnant just pissed me off.

I'd advise if you're flying with someone to get a window seat because then at least you can lean against something to sleep and get off your butt cheeks and change positions a bit.
