Unique Idea?

Don't know if anyone has heard of a "green" baby shower before but I thought that I would mention it. With the economy so bad and so many people out of work a friend recently had a "Green" baby shower.

The deal is that you don't buy anything new! You can give gently used items to the mom to be Newborns don't tend to stain much and items get so little use that they are pracitically brand new in a lot of cases. It's great for the wallet, the enviroment (because you are recycling) and you can give so much more to help the new parents - if you want.

Just an idea I thought was cool enough to share

Some people have them....but they are still virtually unheard of in the UK, It is traditionally an American custom! I like the idea of a green one, but hate the thought of the materialism/financial pressure of them.....I am firmly of the belief that if you are having a baby provide your own pram, cot, furniture etc...of course gifts are greats but I despise the whole gift registry thing...find it a bit vulgar....much like wedding gift lists!!

Wow, had no idea showers were an American thing. Hmm.

I have had to insist that I don't want a bridal shower as people keep asking about throwing me one!

I do want a baby shower simply because it does help and people love to buy things for the baby. I find that you get lots of clothes and teddies because people find it so much fun to buy that stuff. And they adore seeing the baby in the stuff they bought them afterward. It makes them feel special, I think. I really like the idea of the Green shower!!

I have also found that I have no choice is making a registry, both for baby and wedding. People here expect it and seem at a loss as what to do for a gift without it. If you don't have one, they will bug you incessently for one.

I think its a good idea within reason but some people can be funny about second hand items especially if they don't know where they are from (eg charity shop) or not good quality.

At my friends baby shower one of the guests turned up with a binbag full of baby clothes that she had bought from a charity shop and I would say 99 % of the items were poor quality, stained etc.

I have accpeted some clothes from my oh's sister as they are all in perfect condition and have hardly been used (if at all) but someone I used to work with offered me all of her sons baby clothes, blankets etc and I was mortified as she is not the most hygenic person I know (and thats a very mild description!) I had to bin them they were that bad couldn't even have gave them to charity.

What is acceptable to one person may not be to another.

i'm having a baby shower, but we are not asking for gifts etc, the way the invites are being worded is that if anyone would like to get us something would they consider boots or mothercare vouchers so we can get bits as and when we need them.

by the time i'm due in sept, my mates little 1 will be 10months old and she ahs said i can have the moses basket and bedding, she has both girl and boys clothes, car seat and pram (bought these new though) and pretty much everything else baby wise she no longer needs.

I have thought about this too if I have a shower. I am trying to buy as much as possible second hand - much better for the environment! I also thought of asking people to gift us a week of diaper service or a cloth diaper if they would like to give a present. I think here in Canada, people want to give a gift to new babies - I've already received so much!

I don't worry too much about the quality of what I receive (all the big ticket items have already been bought), as I don't think they'd buy ripped or stained items - not a lot of them have kids of their own.

I had a normal baby shower, but I still got loaded with second hand stuff. I've got a huge family, so it's a given that someone else just had a baby If you're going to do a green one, you should still have a little list of what you need on the back of the invitation, instead of a registry.
