What is 'Abdominal Seperation/Diastasis Recti'?

Hi girls, does anyone know what this is? I have been looking at doing some exercises on my belly now because it's really protruding even when I pull it in. I looked on youtube for some and a lot say 'do not do this abdominal exercise if you have abdominal seperation.' - How do you know you have this? Is there a way you can feel your stomach and see? I don't want to start an exercise and it's not the right one for me and could do more damage.

Any help is much appreciated!

Basically when you're pregnant, your abdominal muscles separate down the middle (vertically) as they stretch to accommodate the growing baby and can take a good few weeks post-birth to fuse back together and in some cases, they don't. It's recommended that women who've just given birth wait until after their 6wk postnatal check before exercising (as you can get nasty problems like hernias) to give the muscles a chance to join back together again. It is unlikely you have abdominal separation unless your Dr/MW/HV has told you that you have but if you're not sure, make an appointment and get them to have a feel to make sure everything's where it should be before you start exercising

I've just done a google search to try and find you a picture of the muscles affected and this website came up, which is really helpful:

Enjoy!
