Cloth Nappies beginner

Hi,

Have DD who is 22 months but we automatically bought disposable's for her. However, with LO (21 weeks preg at the mo) I would like to try cloth nappies.

DP is having a hard time understanding it (and I'm missing some bits to be able to explain it to him) so was after some really dumbed down info about it.

The nappies come in different parts don't they? The outer colourful part, the inner soft part and a liner?
Can you get waterproof covers as well to go over the whole thing or do you need seperate outer colourful parts that are waterproof too?

When LO goes toilet what do you do? Far as I know you throw away the liner and wash the inner part is that right?
DP has problems with this as he doesn't like the idea of poo going around our washing machine in one load and then the next being his clothes.
I've tried to explain that the poo is caught on the liner - am I right?

Also one last thing - how much is the average starter pack and when should I buy it?

yeah the poo gets caught in the liner which if you get flushables can just be put down the toilet! And then u wash the inner bit and the outer bit of the nappy in the machine, im not sure about the ones with outer plastic bits cos ive not looked at them,

the amount of poo left on the nappy when it goes in the machine is pretty minimal if you rinse it very well before washing. I don't use disposable liners as I found they're not great on runny newborn/young baby poo and they're not very soft for baby - I use cotton fleece liners, which I rinse and wash with the rest (nappies, boosters, wraps). I spray my nappies with the shower head into a bucket (take the head off and hold my thumb over the hose to get a powerful spray) then pour that down the loo. (LO only does one pooey nappy a day, it's not as nasty as it sounds!) The things are usually stained when they go in the machine but no real solids left. And a wash hot enough to sanitise (60C+) will make sure there's nothing untoward left anywhere.

no matter how good your liner, there will be some poo escaping round the sides, just because LO squelches it (unless you are very swift in getting them changed). a paper liner minimises it but that's all.

Shhh don't tell him that! lol

Must say I'm not too sure I can cope with scraping poo out which why I was looking at the disposable liners. Thats why I went with disposable nappies with DD cos I couldnt face scraping it out. I KNOW Dp won't do it either as he heaves when he just has to take off a disposable.

well, maybe you could research really good paper liners - some are definitely thicker than others and are probably better than the ones I've tried (Tots Bots and Mothercare). I think some people rate Boots' liners. Also, I went to a Nappuccino (coffee morning with a cloth nappy demo) and the lady there had some really thick paper liners that she said could be rinsed and used up to three times, but I guess you wouldn't have to re-use if you didn't want to.

The thing about cloth nappies (that I guess some people wouldn't like) is that there's a lot of trial and error because there are way more nappy types and combinations of liners, wraps, etc, compared to disposables, where you have the choice of four or five brands only. But once you have the right combination for you, they're great and honestly no trouble.

Right ok,

I feel like a right novice (even though I've already got a DD. lol)

I don't understand it all, far as I knew you get a nappy that you put a liner in, then pull it up (like pull up pants) and put an outer over it. Is that right or am I completely confused?

Theres so many different kinds which all work differently, im just starting to understand and get my head round the different kinds of types, i think im gonna buy a few trial ones and test them out and see what suits her when shes here because apparently some dont suit some babies or the babies might not like some or body shapes make them fit diff n stuff, x

oh dear so confusing.
I wonder if I can find a MW or HV to explain how they work and advise on getting some? Might make more sense if someone shows me in RL

doubt the mw or hv will know/have the time/explain it right, theres groups usually in each area, when i went to a NCT sale there was a stand and there was women explaning it and they have a weekly meet which i might try and go to, nappaucino, try googling that and something might come up in your area.. there should be one.
