Recurrent mc's after 1 perfect pregnancy & birth - why ?

My son is 3 and half, and i had the most perfect straight-forward pregnancy and birth with him ... when he turned 2 we started thinking about having another baby, and i have since had 3 mc. Anyone else in the same situation ??

Obviously i am sure something must of gone wrong when i gave birth to son - cos i can't think of any other reason - but the midwives just dismiss this cos everything was 'normal'

The ONLY thing different is that i caught with my son about a month after coming off the pill, but i have not been on the pill with these more recent pregnancies. Does anyone know if this could have anything to do with it ??

Another thing - my miscarriages seem to take at least 2 weeks ... start with spotting which just gradually gets more and more, then after a couple of weeks the 'big stuff' comes away and then i stop bleeding quite quick after that ... i assumed this was normal, but i have read on here that it is much quicker for lots of people. I also have no/very little pain. Does this give any hint to what the problem is?

I'm sorry, i know these questions should be given to a doctor - but i am just sat here and my mind is racing with whys!

I am hoping that now i am having my 3rd miscarriage they will 'look into it' - i am seeing midwife tomorrow.

Thanks for listening
Rachel

Hi hunny, I am so sorry you are going through this.
I have experienced a similar history, concieved Alex in one cycle -easy, straight forward pregnancy on the whole (despite having 2 uteruses with 2 cervix and 2 vaginas)
So figured bringing number 2 into the world would be a similar piece of cake! After 3 losses, the final being at 11 weeks I decided enough is enough. I had read something about secondary infertility, where mums have had one or more easy conceptions and pregnancies and then seem to hit a roadblock.
After the last loss, I was put into contact with a natural fertility clinic, run by the local mothers hospital. The clinic had been in operation for over 20 years, but only in the last 2 years or so had they been focusing on women who were experiencing recurrent loss.

After a series of tests and charting, temping, CM watching we found out I was suffering secondary infertility, manifesting in a luteal phase defect.
Basically after having Alex, my body had reset the hormone cycle 'wrong'. I was ovulating, but the corpus luteum left in the ovary after ovulation was not producing enough progesterone to sustain an otherwise healthy pregnancy. The corpus luteum was also not responding to the hCG being put out by the embyro, which would normally stimulate the corpus luteum to make more progesterone until the placenta finally kicked in around the end of the first tri. So things would go well for varing lengths of time, until basically the progesterone supply was tapped out before the placenta could kick in and we went into no-mans land and miscarried. Phew, long winded- sorry!
I'm taking hCG injections (should be ending these soon) and plant derived progesterone injections twice a week (might have to take these until little one is here, depends on my placenta!) as well as progesterone pessaries nigthly.

The system the hospital uses is called NaPro technology, and is pretty new in Australia although is not a new system worldwide. Mosts obstetricians and doctors over here give me a funny look when it's mentioned. The rate of miscarriage in women using this system is 1 in 50 pregnancies, which is significantly lower than the usual 1 in 5.
http://www.fertilitycare.com.au/?page_id=8 -maybe you'll be able to find a link for the uk. There is a lot of info through google too. It is catholic church based, however the reasearch and system is for everyone, and for people with many different fertility issues, not just luteal phase defect.

I'm currently 14+5 weeks pregnant, scared silly but trying my best to feel optimistic. Hopefully in mid July I can post pictures of the end result!

Hi there,
just wanted to let you know I had the same thing.
Had our dd in 2005, got pg straight away with her a month after coming off the pill, straight forward pg and birth.
We tried for 4 years after that for another baby, most of the time not falling pg, but had 1 chemical, 1 mmc at 13 weeks and 1 mc at 6 weeks.
Eventually (a month after the 6 week m/c) we fell pg again and our ds is now 3 months old.

No explanations were ever given for the losses or the hard time we had falling pg.

Not much help, but never give up hope. Chances are if you have had 1 healthy pregnancy, you will have another. (eventually!)

xx

Hi hunni sorry for your recent loss. Ive had two healthy children now 16 and 8 and since my 8 year old have suffered 5 miscarriages all different times and stages.

I am undergoing both recurrent miscarraige testing and fertility treatment. There is nothing wrong with my fertility according to RMC but they still want to keep testing. I was told its definately not something I was born with because of the two healthy children I have.

All my chromosome tests are normal, but I have a blood clotting disorder which can "develop" after time so this could be the simple explanation. My heterotopic could have been a "freak of nature" however I just see this that if you throw the dice enough times its bound to happen.

It is hard to believe there is no reason but as lots of people say sometimes its just down to luck and the more you try one will stick.

As Carmello comments, this is the route I might be taking with HCG shots and progesterone pessaries pre conception and then clexane after conception.

Try reading the recurrent miscarraige sticky at the top its packed full of information and questions you could ask.

Hi Rae, sorry you've having a tough time
I have been in a similar situation, I had my daughter who we conceived in the 1st month in Dec 2006. Had no problems, worry free etc.... al fine. Then in Nov 2007 we got pregnant again only to miscarry at 6 weeks. We have now gone on to have 5 losses since having my daughter, all losses were between 4 and 6 weeks.
The cause - apparently I have a blood clotting disorder, so I inject myself daily to thin my blood and take asprin to help the thinning process also.
Im not convinced this is my problem but I am being treated for it and I'm now 9 weeks. Please dont give up hope, I know it's hard but there is alot of help oout there just need to find a good clinic.

xxxx

I have a similar story i had 2 children no problem we decided to have another and went on to have 3 12 weeks miscarriages. I had all the tests done and was told there is no reason it happened it was just bad luck. We had a year off ttc and got a bfp just before we started officially ttc again and i'm now holding a beautiful 4 month old in my arms. As horrible as it is now i have every faith you will get your sticky bean soon.

Hi Rae,

Sorry this has happened to you. There are a number of us on the recurrent miscarriage thread (and the LTTC / secondary infertility thread) with children. Sadly, having a child or children doesn't necessarily mean one won't have problems having more. In my case, hormones seem to be to blame.

Hope you get a quick referral for tests. There is some useful info on tests for recurrent miscarriage on the website of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
