No idea what to do...

hey girlies,

Sorry to post again. After much soul searching, googling and research I still cannot decide which would be the best way to find closure and for the baby to go to peace. I have, against every fibre in my body, wished for it to happen naturally but my body just won't let go. I am going into hospital to decide tomorrow and I simply can't pick Medical Management or ERPC/D and C.

Obviously, the quickness and the 'not knowing' of the D n C appeals, but I am concerned about Asherman's Syndrome or scarring or them missing something as it is done blind or infertility, which I know are rare, but then the chances of us having an MMC at 10 weeks are apparently less than 1%, so statistics don't mean anything to me anymore.

Medical management sounds scary, but I would like to be able to take the baby home to bury and I don't believe this is an option with DnC. Also, I understand the risks of infertility are mainly in infection, where they said I would be given anti-biotics as standard. I also think the level of closure would be good for me, but without trying to be graphic the pain and what I might see does scare me, but it would be worth it to keep my fertility.

I know deep down this needs to be my decision, but I would so appreciate any support. I am sorry to keep going on, I am just feeling very lonely and not really coping.

Thank you
-x-

I am so sorry for your loss I had a MMC at 9 weeks and I opted for a D n C as I could not face what I might see and just wanted it over asap, but I was not really aware of risk of infertillity, I had no problems after and now I have two gorgeous children, really dont know what to add but you go with the right decision for you xxx

mmm its difficult. I had an ERPC BUT there is a really small part of me that thought that it was difficult to be awake and being pregnant and then waking up and the feeling of being sooo empty, medical management at lease you would know what is happening and may make it easier to say goodbye BUT I couldn't deal with it being painful and "labour" like also you would have to have a scan to make sure all is ok and if not you would still have to have the ERPC and to have to go through it twice sounded too much to bear. I found the recovery time on the ERPC quick, I bled after for a week and then I was ok, minimal pain.

Re infection / infertility yes there is a risk but it is very small - think about having an epidural in labour that can paralyse you if a mistake is made ... how many people do you know that that has happened too ????? I don't know any because they must do it every day ... as do they do the ERPC's all the time sadly.

Hi hunni so sorry you are in this situation.

I have had 3 d&c and 1 natural miscarriage and all have been hard work. This time I have opted for natural and the methotrexate because I dont want to lose my thick lining of my womb and also dont want surgery on my tube.

Whichever you take is hard work but if you want to ttc soon I would go natural. I no people say its along drawn painful process but you are in control and also its not invasive and clinical, you can do it at home, be with a loved one and it also doesnt affect your future chances.

My womb lining is perfect at the moment the nurse said on Friday but I cant carry either child becuase of the one in my ovary !

So we are doing it naturally.

Please PM me if you want to chat xxx

Hey Drazic
I too was googling everyhing yesterday. I just don't know what to do as not much is happening with me naturally. I am scared about ERPC. I know the risks are small but stats don't mean anything to me anymore. Good luck for tomorrow. Let me know how it goes.

Fluff - what did you mean by not wanting to lose the thick lining of your womb?

Hi

its a tough one. But personally if natural was not an option for me; I would choose the ERPC; they told me that the ERPC is a different procedure than D&C as it doesn't involve scraping; so less risk of scarring problems but then again slightly higher risk of retained products. I'm scared of surgery and there are certain risks with it I would be really concerned about but a lot of the risks only affect certain people; not everyone. I already have a 'funny' cervix have problems with cervical erosion, which means some healthy cells end up on the outside of the cervix and bleed for no real reason. I've heard that it can be made worse by ERPC/D&C as it is. Similarly with the risk of Asherman's I don't think its any more risky with one ERPC than natural but the thing is they tend to just leave women to it after the ERPC and don't tell them so much about the risk of retained products; whereas with the natural mc and in some hospitals with medical management as well they keep scanning you until they are sure everything is gone. In that case all you could do is insist on a scan in 2-4 weeks for your own reassurance. The Medical Management route just sounds like a really forced version of everything coming out naturally (it doesn't sound particularly quicker and certainly sounds more painful); and I have not heard very good experiences with it from ladies on here.

When you have a D&C technically a "scrape" as my old GP calls it, they scrape away all the lining which is built up. It has to be nice and thick for bubs to implant nicely. When you have a d&c this is scraped away so that the implanted pregnancy is got rid of.

Although some people say you are extra fertile after a MC I tend to disagree becuase all my specialists have said you need at least 1 period to allow the lining to build back up again. I dont want them to scrape it all away as its taken me 3 months to get a good one again and as the nurse said its perfect at the moment !

Hi

in this area (as explained by specialist in the hospital) and from what I have read in leaflets, they use a gentle vacuum; not the scraping as the main device to get everything out; the ERPC is usually done by vacuum and I've heard its a different procedure than a D&C (though D&C the traditional way is still used in some countries; and areas in the UK) so you need to check that out, it may be that your GP is not up to date with what is used nowadays...
