Hi bevan,

I found out on Tuesday that baby was only 9 weeks old (was supposed to be 12) and no heartbeat.

They gave me first tablet on the Tuesday then sent me home, said that I may have bleeding at home but didn't. Asked me to go back to hospital for day stay on Thursday at 8am.

Took the tablets every 3 hours, 4 tablets first and then 2 tablets every 3 hours after that. Started with mild period like cramps instantly after taking first tablets, after 2nd dose I was offered paracetamol but they also had a prescription written out for codeine, gas and air and pethadene.

I opted for codeine at 6pm after taking more paracetamol and it failing to take away the pain. I also had lower back pain but I usually get that during periods and it was similar to that. I would definately advise taking a hot water bottle with you, that really helped me. Maybe even two one for tummy and one for back.

At 7:00pm the pain started to get worse not like cramps more like a sharp pain, they were on and off every 6 minutes at first then it got pretty much every minute within about half an hour.

I called the nurse to ask for more drugs but they couldn't give me any cause it hasn't been very long between last tablets.

They advised that I take a bath and see after that how I felt.

Then suddenly before I even got into bath the pains went! I went to toilet and passed the sac and baby.

It may sound odd but even thought the baby was only 9 weeks we popped the sac and held the baby and said goodbye which we found upsetting but also very comforting.

If you want to know anything else, I am here xx

Hi Swanny

Thanks for posting reply, i really wanted to hold out for natural but cant bear the wait and nor can my partner. I am worried about side effects of the drugs and also how much blood i should expect to loose? I go for first pill tomorrow then monday for admission will be Monday (hoping it doesnt come to that).

I am really sorry you too have and still are going through this-- iwouldnt wish it on my worst enemy!

I think i am at the moment more scared of the pain of passing the sac and little one that i havent even started to deal with the emotional side of things properly.

were you able to go home the same day?

I am already taking codene for my lower back pain and it takes the edge of it but as for cramping it seems to stop and start. If i lie down and go to sleep all of the back pain and cramps have gone in the morning- then as the day goes on it starts up again and gets worse! this has been the case for last 5 days which is why i am opting for the medical help.

the worst part of it all is i still feel preg sick and have heartburn e.t.c the symtons are becoming weaker each day now.

Take care

Thanks again

JJ

So sorry. I don't have experience with medically induced, but have had two natural losses and those were painful for about 5 hours a piece with a lot of clotting and bleeding. The best advice I can give is to take it easy when it starts and be ready for anything because everyone's body handles mc differently. (((hugs)))

So sorry to hear this news, i had med mc last month and i agree take hot water bottle with you and take what ever pain controll they offer. I have had 7mc and even when having natural especially with first and second i went in for pain controll only. actually passing the sac was not painfull it was the lead up to that which was painfull. I also took oral morphine which really helped but i would ask for antiemetic also as it can make you feel sick. I was not prepared for volume of blood as it can mean that the whole pregnacy comes away all together and at once. As i lost alot of blood i was kept in for extra night but had been told before i would be home within 6hrs. Emotionally its hard and im sure everyone handles it differently but hopefully you will be able to have your own room, my oh stayed with me for two nights.
If you do have full natural mc make sure you get scanned afterwards to make sure everything has been passed.
Thinking of you xx

I didn't want to wait for natural either as I was scared of things happening while I was at home and although hospitals are sometimes not the nicest place to be I felt safter there and my husband stayed with me all day.

I went in at 8 and passed the sac at 8:30pm and went home within about 30 mins. I just wanted to get out of there and get into my own bed be then I was exhausted and emotionally drained.

I had my last set of tablets at 8:15pm and was told that if nothing had happened by 12 that they would examine me to see if the neck of the womb had opened. I didn't really want that to happen but then just after last tablets it all happened then I went home.

They normally send you home if nothing happens on the first day and then ask you to go back but as I was scared they said that we could have stayed in over night. I was worried about going home and then the pain getting too much, although they did say if we went home and it got bad that we could have gone back in anytime as is was a 24 hour ward.

I would just advise that if you are in pain to tell them and don't be afraid to ask for more pain relief if you feel you need it. Passing the sac wasn't actually painful it just felt warm and you could tell it was coming out but it happened within seconds once the cramps stopped.

I hope everything goes as well as it can for you. Thoughts are with you.

x

OMG!

Went to hosp today for internal "medical managed miscariage" Nurse said they wanted to see everything i passed. So tablets inserted 10am! mad pain started 1030am followed by heavy (pouring like a tap full blast) bleeding then at 12 i passed a huge clot which measuered about the size of the sac as shown on the scan! i asked is that it (hinking how quick!) was told maybe, yes no maybe by lots of diffo people.

So bleeding stopped at 130 for an hour no blood then it started again as before and i passed a smalled clot then at 330 bleeding stopped by 5 pm after asking to see a doctor at 1pm i finally saw a doctor.

Doctor said we cant be sure if you have passed everything so go home and take preg test in 10 days!!!!!!!! 10 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If i still show preg then i will need a scan then if still show preg and scan inconclusive will need a D &C!

So i still dont know if i have fully miscarried am still in god damm pain and as for medically managed what was the point!

RANT over just wanted to share my riddiculous experiance, iam still bleeding and have lower back pain i am hoping this will pass eventually but as for the mental torture of not knowing still i can only plod on as if it has all passed in the hope that it has!

Hi

I am so sorry and angry to hear this hun. This is why local hospital here (E. London) don't offer medical management; as there is more risk of terrible pain, retained tissue (higher risk than natural or D&C) and heavy bleeding, at my local hospital they said they can tell from the scan alone if things were complete or not (but they have very very high-tech scanning equipment) and told me to come back in 2 weeks for that and not to worry in the meantime. They also gave me antibiotics as a preventative measure in case any infection crops up. I chose to have a natural miscarriage at home which was scary in some ways; but I preferred it to a d&c and the pain was manageable with normal OTC stuff (cocodamol and ibuprofen), whereas I have heard with medical management the pain can often only be handled with prescription drugs and gas and air. Everyone is different but I had very painful, quick labours when I had my kids but when miscarrying the pain was a lot more manageable under natural conditions; it was the amount of blood and gore that ended up being the upsetting aspect. Once things started progressing with me I think it was a quicker process than medical management too(took less than 24 hours from having scan to starting to expel everything properly). Next time (which I'm hoping there won't be) I'm not sure what I'd go for; D&C (oh sorry as they call it ERPC) sounds less traumatic but the prospect of surgery to me is too scary in and of itself. Thats just me personally; everyone is different.

You will still be bleeding; but if the actual cramping has gone away and the bleeding has gone to a red; but lighter and clotless (though you may still get the odd blood only clot) then its a good bet that everything did come out. With me I passed the sac first; maybe thats why things were not so bad. Passing the placenta (which was intact) was the worst for me; after it came out there were a few more clots (which I think were just the womb lining) and then it all died down. I am so sorry to here of the unsympathetic way in which you were dealt with. These doctors see this everyday so they become so blase about it

Thanks for your posts they really have helped!

I have still experienced pain and some cramping today but not on the scale i had yesterday my bleeding has stopped except when i go to the loo and then i normally pass red with some string looking clots (hoping this is just the tail end of what needs to be passed).

I am managing pain with codeine (60mg) twice a day as pain comes and goes tends to get worse as day goes on. I am hoping alot of the pain is due to the soreness after yesterday.

I feel very angry and let down by the NHS i appreciatte they had other patients and see it everyday- however i cant help but feel that i had i have opted to have an abortion and gone to a privated clinic i would have been treated better and given much more support and info.

Dont get me wrong some of the nursing staff were lovely however i felt the auxiallry staff were clueless and put in awkward postions and some of the doctors i have encountered were inept!

I am lookin to move forward and feel i am doing ok with the emotional side of things (as best as anyone can). However the torment of not knowing if the physical side is over is upsetting and frustrating to say the least.

I really would like to think ive had a one off bad experiance and it doesnt always take place this way for the majority of women.

I really did feel completley alone with what it was i was trying to do yesterday iam very lucky that i had my loving partner with me to get me through the day.

Hi hun

glad to know that you are feeling better and you have a supportive partner. The pain may be worse as the medical management route is quite a forceful way of getting everything out; but do take it easy as you may be overdoing it. It does sound to me that things are going as they should; just a word of advice though don't take the codeine for too long as it can cause constipation which can last a few days after stopping taking it; I'd switch to ibuprofen and paracetemol ASAP (I've had bad experiences of constipation caused by codeine and cocodamol)
