Question re: recurrent miscarriage testing

Well, I had an appointment with my OB/GYN today. This is the doctor that I said I would never go back to after my miscarriage. I just don't like him and the vibe I get from him. However, since I can't get in to see my OB/GYN of choice until December 1 (appointment already made), I decided I'd see my current doctor until then to get the testing started, etc.

First, he said that he wanted to do an ultrasound to make sure all was okay. I've been having more painful and heavier periods than I had before the miscarriage, although they are starting to get better as time goes on (but are not yet back to what they were before our miscarriage).

He also said that he wanted to do a complete blood work up to check my hormone levels, etc, etc.

Lastly, almost as an after-thought, he said that he thought I should get some recurrent miscarriage testing done since I've had two and the last one was farther along at 17 weeks. He said we would start with blood work and that it would cost a "bit of money". I said that was fine and he wrote up the requisition form and I left.

The lab is in the same building as his office so I went directly there to get the blood work done. Surprisingly, I was able to get right in.....after paying $392 for the tests! That's a little bit more than a "bit of money"! haha Oh well.....it's probably a good idea so I'll just suck it up and not complain about the cost.

On top of the complete blood work up, he did the following tests:
  • Factor V Leiden
  • Lupus Anticoagulant
  • Proteins
  • Homocysteine
  • Thrombosis Genetics
I have an appointment to go back and see him on September 21st at 9:45am to get my results. He said the results take awhile, so I'll have to be patient.

Has anyone else had this type of testing done? What exactly are they testing for? Anything come of it? Thanks!!!

I am not sure what blood work I have had. The last one you mentioned, thrombosis...I think I may have had that one. I also had a lap, hysterscopy, D&C, hydrotubation, HSG....and some hormone testing (not sure which ones) and also checked my thyroid and checked me for diabetes.

Thanks, Jasmak! I'm just starting down the testing road, so have had nothing done yet but the blood work and will be having the ultrasound (I have to call and make the appointment tomorrow).

Anybody know how long the blood results took to get back? He said a month, but that seems like a really long time. I was going to call earlier to see if they were back, but not sure when to call.

Hi Jessa

I've had all these blood tests done and it does take time to come back especially the genetic testing.

All my bloods were clear however, it was total peace of mind and glad they tested me after my 2nd MC last year (which was a chemical pregnancy).

My new gyne, as a precaution still put me on 75mg aspirirn plus everytime I've been pregnant since then I inject heripin daily (clexane injections). I still can't hold a baby and am now going to a trial to be tested for Natural Killer Cells. Also, I have low progesterone but he doesn't seem concerned enough to treat.

I think the uk's testing s very different to canada.. me and OH had genetics testing, and i had a various of other tests to check my blood, immunity, and they tested the baby, that was a must at my hospital.
Genetics testing can take 3 months to return. well mine did.
