My experience and advice against medical induced miscarriage (tablets) LONG!

I found out on tuesday that my little one died at 7+4 and I should of been around 10/11 weeks. So as I had not m/c naturally I decided to opt for the tablet route where they make you bleed.

I had two tablets on tuesday but nothing happened. Went back in thursday and had something inserted down below to start contractions at 11am. Then every three hours after I had two tablets by mouth, I lost a massive amount of blood. It was so traumatic that I would never recommend this to anyone.
It was only supposed to be a couple of hours (according to the doctor) but I was in hospital for two days!!!

I was bleeding so bad that I lost all my energy and felt so ill, I had to have a sickness injection in my leg. I went to the toilet at 8pm, sat down but could not get back up, I was slurring my words and I turned grey (according to dh) The nurses were amazing and rushed to help pick me up and get me back in my room. I had an emergency examination and the doctor found that there was quite a bit of tissue was stuck at the top of my cervix. He had to remove it (without pain relief) using this scissor like instrument which was really horrific.

He then tried to find a vein to put in a drip but all my veins had collapsed!! After 10 minutes of searching he found a vein and proceeded to put in the drip, this was also really painful. I am normally not so much of a wuss but I think I was so exhausted that every prod/pinch/injection hurt like hell! The nurses had to do my obs every 20 minutes and I was then ordered not to get out of bed and I had over 1200 ml of fluid pumped into me. I was also not allowed to eat as they said they may have to operate in the morning if all the tissue had not passed.

The next morning I managed to get out of bed and make it to the toilet. The bleeding had got a lot lighter. Saw the doctor who said she wanted me to go for a scan to see if any tissue remained. So I did and the guy in the ultrasound dept said there was a bit of tissue left in but he thought it would come out of its own accord as it was so low in the uterus.

I went back to the ward and the doc said she was not happy with the u/s result and wanted to speak with the consultant. The consultant then came in and said you can go home now!

I have to go back next week for a follow up scan to make sure everything has gone.

Sorry for the LONG story but I just wanted to say that if this ever happended again I would opt for the surgery route. I was told how it would be only a couple of hours and "not a big deal" NEVER AGAIN!!

Wow I am really sorry for your loss.

This pretty much is exactly the same as happened to me.

MMC found at 12 weeks, tablets by mouth then pessaries to make cervix contract. Bleeding ALL day, I must have handed around 20 toilet bowls to the nurses full of blood and 'jelly' stuff. After around 8 hours of this, I couldn't even stand up and kept passing out.
Was rushed (almost naked by wheelchair) through the ward to a room where she removed the sac by forceps as it had gotten stuck.
No pain relief. I was kept in overnight on a drip, then after blood tests was told I was need a transfusion as I had hardly blood any left. Then another Doc said no she will be fine, tell her to go home and rest for a month!

I think I would also opt for a D&C next time.

I should add that the hospital staff were all amazing! They are a credit to the NHS!

Hiya so sorry you had to experience that it must have been horrific on top of the emotion you were going through.

Ive had 4 D&C in my adult life, three for MC and one for exceptionally heavy periods when I was younger and the MC D&C were always over and complete within a few hours. I couldnt go through what you did and admire you for that. My first D&C was at 10 weeks pregnant and I went through a similar episode to you but I was in Gran Canaria and I began to MC I didnt even know I was pregnant so I was gobsmacked. I nearly bled to death and ended up having an emergency D&C and it probably saved my life. I would always opt for surgical management. Lets hope none of us ever need to again. Take Care hunni - Heather xx
