Natural miscarrige or D&C?

Hi ladies, I was wondering if anyone could offer me any advice on choosing between a natural miscarrige or a D&C. My doctor told me on wednesday that my HCG levels were dropping, and that I should expect to miscarry over the next week to two weeks. I went for a scan on Friday and the tech said that she would expect it to happen over the weekend, it's now sunday and nothing is happening. If I didn't know all this I would still be thinking everything was fine. I know it's difficult to talk about, but I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on miscarry naturally or having a d&c. I am so confused as to what I should do, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ladies.

A natural MC can be very painful and messy but D&C isnt without risks of infection ...missed tissue ect its a personal choice ...sorry for your loss

It's a tricky decision, I'm sorry you have to make it. I went for D&C because it was the less painful more predictable option and I wanted to keep my babies remains to be buried. I was told that you were more likely to concieve quicker but don't know if there's any truth in that as am nearly 6 weeks on and have no signs of any cycle.
I had a very painful bladder infection recently apparently brought on by D&C so there are risks, but if you go for the natural option you may need a D&C anyway as happened to my sister. Whatever decision you take I hope it goes ok and use the support here if you need it!

Hi BLG, I'm so sorry to hear your bad news. I miscarried naturally on Wed after starting bleeding on Sun (mothers day). The cramps started on Mon and got worse til I passed it.

To be honest i found it quite hard emotionally because I saw everything and was on my own at the time. However once it passed I felt better physically almost immediately but need some time to deal with my feelings.

I wanted to do it naturally for fear of causing internal scarring or damage as I have enough problems down there (PCOS) and want to try again straight away.

Even though it was hard at the time, I'm still glad i let it happen naturally as I got to say goodbye. A friend of mine had a D&C and knew from the start thats what she wanted as she wanted to get on with her life, although she still needed time off to deal with her loss.

Its a difficult one hon, I'm really sorry you even have to consider these options. We're all here for you.

From what I've read about some of the girls' experiences on here, a natural miscarriage can be very painful. My friend had one and she said it was more painful than giving birth. You will also pass the baby which I think must be so traumatic. I had a missed miscarriage. Like you, I thought everything was fine until I went for my scan at 12 weeks and told the baby had died at 7 weeks 2 days. That means I went for 5 weeks carrying my dead baby (sorry for the phrasing there, but I don't know how else to put it). The doctor said that as I hadn't miscarried naturally within the 5 weeks, it was likely that it wasn't going to happen any time soon. I opted for a D&C which, although wasn't nice, was probably a lot less traumatic. I hated the idea of carrying my dead child inside me. It kind of freaked me out. I just wanted everything sorted so that I could move on. This all happened on 23 December and by 25 December, I was having some light spotting and mild cramps. That lasted a couple of days and then stopped and then I had my D&C on 29 December.

It was awful knowing that once I was wheeled down to theatre, that it was all going to be completely over but if I had to go through this all again, I would go for the D&C every time. I had minimal bleeding afterwards and what felt like mild period pains. The bleeding lasted for around 10 days and wasn't heavy at all.

I'm so sorry for what you are going through. It was one of the worst times of my life but I'm feeling a lot better about it now, although it does get to me every now and again.

Only you can make the choice that is right for you and I'm sure you'll make the right one xxx

Hun, so very sorry.

It's such a hard decision to have to make.

Personally, I gave birth to my baby at 17+5 and then had a D&C to remove the placenta. The natural part was very traumatic, I bled a lot, my waters broke, lost lots of clots then had baby, placenta didn't come away so he was attached to me till they cut the cord nearly 2 hours later! For the week before I had proper contractions every night and they were painful. I was on my own till the ambulance arrived and was very frightened by it all.
Once baby passed there was instant relief but the whole process felt dragged out because they tried to get the placenta to move naturally to no avail despite my requesting a D&C.

God forbid I had to go through that again, I would probably opt for natural again especially if I was that far along, I needed to see my baby to know it was all over, if they'd done a D&C it would forever be on my mind that they might have made a mistake.

You need to do whatever is right for you hun. Thinking of you x

With my mmc at 12 weeks, I didn't want to wait for it to happen naturally, as it could have taken weeks. I also didn't want a D&C as I had problems conceiving in the first place, and apparently a D&C is quite an invasive procedure, so my Doc advised me to have an induced m/c.

Took a pill that day and went back in to hospital a few days later to put the pills 'up there', then waited for the m/c to begin. It was quite a painful 8 hours, but they give you painkillers and are watching you constantly so I felt I was quite well taken care of. It is apparently usually quicker for most women.
It was better than doing it at home alone like I did with my natural m/c at 6 weeks.

I really think it is an individual choice and hope you choose what you feel most comfortable with.

Hi ladies, thank you all for your support. It looks as if nature has made the decision for me as I have started spotting today, I know that I still may require a D&C but I am trying to trust that my body will do what it is supposed to. Thank you again for all of your support. My new question is, we are planning to try again as soon as we can, so do I keep taking my prenatals/folic acid or do I stop until the bleeding stops then start again. I know that it is recommended to wait until you've had 1 AF but I don't know if I can. Anyone with any ideas..thanks ladies, I could not make it though this without you.

hey lovely ..... to you
i don't think it does any harm to carry on taking all the vits etc ... i think they tell you to wait an AF mainly for dating, but you can try again whenever you feel ready ........
take care of yourself - take time off work if you need to
