It's all happening now!
And the reality of it all is starting to sink in!
My eldest baby is now 11 and starting high school in September.
I went along to the introduction pale as a ghost, sat through the entire intro in a daze!
It felt like only yesterday that i had her.
Two days later she's there 3 full time days for a trial and boy did i worry.
She has never gone to the shop alone, been out of my sight or played out in the street.
To make matters worse, she was the only one from her school attending that very high school so she was all alone
I accompanied her so far before being told to make myself scarce so no one would see her with me!
Me!?! I'm her mum, not old and quite hip and trendy.
That day i paced to and fro the home, phone glued to my hand!
On collecting her, i had to wait so far down so no one could see me again.
On seeing her finally emerging, I couldn't run and give her the biggest mummy cuddles and kisses that i had always given her. Just a simple "Okay" and the what seemed like forever stroll home with the distance between us.
About 30 inches away side by side to be precise.
She told me how her day went and that she had had thoroughly enjoyed it, made many new friends, so many in fact that it took her mind of her Junior friends completely. That she can't wait until the "Big September".
Little did she know that i'm counting the days and marking them off in my diary
Two more days that went on for, and in those days she changed.
She has seemed to of grown up over night!
Not in a unsettling way, just a way to say that "I'm growing up mum".
On the last day of her school trial, and just before her bedtime she approached me. "Mum, you do know that i love you don't you?" I welled up with tears.
"I just want you to know that, and to say don't worry mum as i will be fine, i'm a big girl now".
It was from that exact moment that i knew in my heart that my baby was no longer my baby, that she was now a beautiful young lady.
That it was time that i took that step back and stopped wrapping her in cotton wool (because i would if i could).
Let her follow her path of that extra bit of independence.
My advice to all those mums and dads out there that have their little ones, make the most of the time that you have with them at those wonderful years.
Because before you know it, they too will be in high school.
Anyway that's my little offload tonight, a little weight off my shoulders.
