educating kids about food-rant at SDs mum

James's ex-wife is filling her childs head with rubbish, we eat healthily every things fresh. we like to educate about food, where it comes from natural remades etc..

anyway i gave amy some warm lemon and honey cause she had a bad chest, she loved it so i gave her some honey on toast.

shes gone home telling mummy how much she likes 'the sweet honey'

and shes come back today saying that honeys full of bad sugar and itll make her teeth fall out.

honeys full of fruit sugars and has many health benefits, this is coming from the women who feeds her kids sweets to keep them quite!

white sugar is actually really bad for you

http://www.healingcancernaturally.co...cts-risks.html

ive now explained to amy that there are diff types of sugars and the sugar in honey is fruit sugar so not the same sugar thats in sweets.

so the questions is do you spend time educating you kids about food or do you tell them that things are bad for them with little explanation of why??

How annoying - Honey is a natural remedy and can even help protect against allergies - the silly woman obviously doesn't know what she's talking about! I think you've done the right thing in expalining it to Amy - perhaps she can go back and educate her mother!

I'll be teaching my kid the difference between good and bad food. I'm a bit of a health nut, so they're going to be exposed to mainly healthy food anyway. Although I'm not going to deprive them of treats now and again. I will explain to them that if we go out to eat somewhere or they get candy, we're doing it because its a treat or a special occasion, and that its not something you do every day.

But yes, food education is incredibly important. I'd just keep trying to reinforce it at your house, when she gets older she'll at least have some basic knowledge, even if her mother doesn't teach her.

I'm not teaching about good or bad because coming from an ed past, I always labeled foods good or bad. I'm trying to teach my children about healthy foods and foods in moderation. That's all we can really do

I'm a pretty big believer in giving kids "whys" to things in general. If they don't know the reasoning as to why something is bad or good how do we expect them to make good decisions when they are older? I'd say that translates to food just as much as moral lessons.
