Help with Maternity Pay


Right, I need some guidance/advice as i'm strugggling to understand a slip i've just be handed which indicates what i'll be given whilst on Maternity leave.

Basically what i dont get is this whole "compensation" lark and stuff...

Do i have to claim anything? Will i recieve the money thats indicated in the "Total Claimable" directly into my account?

And ALSO, why is that every two months i get slightly more money?

Hi Natalie

You only need to worry about the figures on the left hand side of that sheet up to Net Pay. Net pay being the key one as that's what you'll get. The stuff on the right hand side of that sheet is only relevant to your employer. I'm guessing you work for a small employer? Small employers can claim back all of their SMP contributions to you (Reclaim column) plus 4.5% compensation (Compensation column) so that's what that shows.

SMP is weekly paid and up until this year couldn't be split across weeks. Your employers seem to be calculating your SMP based on full weeks (4 in Sept, 5 in October at the rate of £112.75 per week). They don't have to do this anymore and can actually pay you for the number of days in the month. If you're bothered about that, you could point your employers in the direction of this help on the Inland Revenue website:

SMP/SPP paid part-weekly
A woman is entitled to a weekly rate of SMP, but for
women expecting babies on or after 1 April 2007 SMP can
be paid as part weeks to help employers align payments
to their employees normal pay period. The weekly rate
may be split into two and if it is, the calculation is done on
the basis of dividing the weekly rate by seven.
For example if the Pay Period covers the end of one
month and the beginning of the next that is two days in
April and five days in May, then pay two sevenths in one
month and five sevenths the next month.
This part week payment may also apply to the payment of
SPP for the one or two weeks it is paid.
