MarchBaby -
I don't know your circumstances at all, so this might be a completely unhelpful idea, but...
we live up in Calgary, with crazy weather - lots of snowstorms, etc - and we get by beautifully with a small, fuel-efficient sedan.
Even when gas prices spiked, we were always just fine. It takes us approx. $35-45 to fill our tank and we get a good 10 days city driving out of that.
Is it feasible for you to trade the bigger vehicle in and start driving something more fuel-efficient?
I don't know if you maybe need a big vehicle because your OH is a contractor or something like that?
I just know that we've been really grateful to have that cushion from the gas prices that a small car affords, so could that help you?

I don't think fuel of any sort is going to get cheap again anytime in the near future. It is most visible at the gas pump, but groceries and everything else have been reflecting the true cost of our oil-dependent economy. I think we are in for tough economic times ahead, even with the recent bail-out package for all the bad mortgages. I think the problem is a lot bigger than that and any ways that we can figure out to live a simpler, cheaper life will probably really help us over the next few years.

I really haven't noticed the shortage...but I have heard of this, more east because I'm very west for Massachusetts, near Vermont.

But I'm soooo there with you with the insane prices! Thankfully I drive a Prius and it doesn't spend much and it's a small town where I don't need to drive much.

But I can't belive that you guys have to drive 45 minutes to the NEAREST gas station! Crazy!

We just recently got the bigger vehicle. I have a smaller Nissan Sentra which is broke down right now (running hot and had a blow out: need new tires), which we are going to start driving soon. I am waiting on my refund from uni to get it fixed and get new tires.
But OH works on boats and often has to go pick up/drop off/take out pretty big boats and therefore needs a truck to pull them. So we do need something pretty big enough to pull them.

no, the nearest gas station is less than 1 minute away. However, the nearest one WITH gas is 45 minutes.

We had two gas stations in town today get gas. I bet they are out right now. EVERYONE was lined up filling up their vehicles.. STUPID! I SWEAR! They have told everyone NOT to fill up, because then everyone doesn't get gas. If they just go about like NORMAL then there will be enough gas for EVERYONE! People are getting on my nerves!
There was a fight at one of them today. One lady filled up and then started filling gas jugs and another lady got mad at her and they got in a fight over it! My step dad witnessed it!
