Working for agency.... temp staff??

What laws cover them in terms of unfair dismissal etc?? My sis has just text me and apparently they are calling all temp staff in and sacking them for silly things... she says its obvious they are trying to make cuts!!!

Can they just sack anyone for anything!??!! Being permanant they have to follow procedures but what about temp/agency staff??

Thanks girls!!

Employment Law just isnt my thing hehe!!

Hello hun
Unfortunately they can just sack people like that if they are temping through an agency - ive had to sack people for no reason on hundreds of occassions and its not easy

Usually the company is asked by the agency to give temp staff either a week or a months notice (depending on how long they have been temping) so that the person is given time to find alternative work. Most companies tend not to do this - it is not a legal requirement and whereas some companies will give notice as a 'goodwill gesture' ive found that most do not.
Sadly, through my experience ive noticed that companies who are having financial difficulties or are struggling somewhat, often take on a number of temp staff for this reason - if things do start to go wrong for the company, it is very very easy to make cuts.
Im sure your sister hasnt done anything wrong. The amount of times my temps have been told by the company they are being sacked for unsatisfactory work/inadequate performance etc and then the company have called me and told me they are cutting back on staff due to financial probs/budgets etc is unvbelievable. These poor people think they have done something wrong when in fact its just the company who havent got the balls to tell them the real situation.
Hope this helps to some extent

xx

thanks hun...

they havent sacked my sister as of yet but she was getting worried as they were getting rid of all the other agency staff!! I think its finally gave her the kick up the arse she needed!!

Shes thinking of new careers now!!

Its so bad that the law doesnt protect you!! Not good if you have a family etc to look after!!

thanks again

It is bad that the law doesnt protect you. An agency I used to work for didnt work with companies unless they signed an agreement to say they would give notice - albeit only a week.
Its not good at all if you have a family to look after. Just before I started maternity a girl who had been temping for 6 months and who was told was going to be made permanent got the boot. She had to go the same day. She was on a great wage and it was walking distance from her house. She had 3 kids to look after and the job was just perfect for her but unfortunately there wasnt a lot she could do.
I hate recruitment sometimes

Good luck to your sis anyway and hopefully she wont be one of the people they get rid of!

I'm a temp and the law is shocking!! I have been so lucky with my posts. There are lots of big companies that treat agency workers like shit
