Question

ex husband - should I call him

well, I knew one time there will come the day, where I have to consider to get in touch with my ex-husband!

to explain, we have been married, but it didn't work out, so I divorced him! apparently he is from Brasil and got his immigration status through our marriage!

I don't know, what would happen with him if the home office would find out that we are divorced!

but last week I received a letter from the inland revenues debt management department, asking me if I know about his whereabouts!

I could reply telling them the last know address I have, and attaching my divorce certificate, in order not to receive anything related to him anymore!

but I am not sure whether he will get a problem with his immigration then and at the end I don't want to feel guilty, if he will not be able to live in Europe anymore!

should I call him and tell him, I have received this letter and he needs to get in touch with them?

by now, I avoided contact with him totally and as well, when I will call him and the baby makes noise in the background, he will find out I have a baby, where I am not sure how he will react on!

pls help

I wouldn't tell him either, but I would let immigration know. You don't want to get involved in that, and if they do find out (through other means than you) and decide to go after him, they may go after you as well for concealing this from them. I've dealt a lot with immigration authorities and they are not people you want to piss off.

I would let Inland Revenue know, as you said. They may or may not contact immigration. However, if he has been granted his indefinite leave to remain, there are only certain circumstances where it would be revoked.

thx for your answers, guys!

I would feel better to do, what I have to do and let them know, that I will not get in trouble @ the end!

but if immigration is going after him, what will happen?

surely they won't protect me, is it?

with the divorce proceedings, I believe he got to know my new address and if he finds out, that he's got problems with immigration 'cos of me, I am worried he is coming after me! expecially as I have a baby now, what I have to protect!

I would need to live with constant worries about what will happen the next day and this would be utmost unpleasant!

he can react out of the place and this is also why I avoided any contact with him so far (especially, that he won't find out I have a baby now!!!)

don't know what to do

I would let them have his address and send your divorce certificate. You don't want to be dragged down in this, because if he's in trouble it'll look bad on you for withholding information or something.

Very tricky situation

It really depends on immigration, not sure how it works there, but here if we had gotten divorced before my permanent residency went through I would have had to leave the country. Now though, since I'm an established PR I'm allowed to stay in the country, whether we divorce or not.

in order to get a permanent residence he would have needed to live in UK for five years, which he didn't when I divorced him!

so, I am not sure whether he is still eligible to stay in the country!

I think I would give the address and the papers..... Like everyone has said... you dont want to get in trouble. If he harrasses you for it, you can get him into even more trouble....and just call the police..
