i have been racking my brain trying to decide wether to give the baby mine or OH's second name. i came to a decision today to give her his because...
1- if i give her mine and me and OH marry ill have to change it to his anyway
2- if i give her mine and then i get married to sum1 else in years to come she will have my old name and wont have either of our names
3- iv never really liked my second name
4- OH will always be her dad so no matter what happens the name will alway mean something unlike mine if i marry etc

but my family keep influencing me telling me her name will sound stupid with his name etc but when will she be using her second name realistically and if i give her his second name ill give her a middle name too so when she does have to give her full name its split up a little... OH's second name is Edge and mine is Brownell i hate mine! so it would be Lilly Edge or Lilly Brownell but i was thinking Lilly Rose Edge :s and i dont want to have to change it to his if we marry etc and her have to write on application forms etc throughout her life that shes been known as a different name in the past!

anyway back to the point OH used to have his dads second name and lost contact at age 4 and his nan changed his name to Edge as she cared for him due to his mum being... well basically a bad mother. so on his passport hes Edge but on his Birth certificate hes tyrer but if he changed his name by depol wouldnt he now have a birth certificate with Edge on :S
so i dont know what to do now! when u go to register your baby do u have to take any documents with you like your birth certificate etc to prove ur name for the babies birth certificate?

i know most people will say the decision is mine etc but i just want peoples opinions and maybe a bit of advise about what to do! ha its complicated i know but its battering my head thinking about it!

I don't know anything about registering but I do think that ultimately it is your decision. Don't listen to your family, if you want to give your little girl her daddy's last name than that is your right. I'm married and still retain my maiden name, but my child will carry DH's name.

You don't need any documents except the bit of paper that says your baby was born - you get this from the midwives. You can call your child anything you like, we gave Kaya Barry's mother's maiden name (Hunter) as I don't like his last name and I really liked Hunter. So Kaya has a different last name from both her mum and her dad lol.

Mine with have my OH last name even though we're not married. I dunno why, it just seems right for us. Although if the baby has any complications (god forbid) they'll put the baby in your name so the dad can't discharge them without your concent. I'm pretty sure you can change that though

If you are not married to the father, until the baby is registered they automatically have your maiden name in the hospital on all their identity things. Seren had my name till she was registered with OH's surname

As far as I know they put babies in the Mothers surname whatever now (if your not married)! I asked about it when I had Noah as wasn't too happy about him not having his proper name on his ID tags! I got them to write me a new one when I was leaving so I could put them in his record book and they'd say 'N. Spindler' rather than my surname!

My lil one will have it's fathers surname, I just think that that's the way it should b. But like others have said it's your choice at the end of the day xx
