I'm Currently Feeling: | Stupid Landlord! Ughhhhh!! I'm so upset right now...
DH and I are moving to a new place because our current townhouse has leaks which are accumulating mold and the house on a whole is just unsuitable for a baby to be in. We decide to move at the very beginning of January and told our Landlord on January 5 because he wasn't in town on the 1st, he was visiting his home in another town which we do not have the number to.
When we told him we were moving out for Feb 1 he was fine with it and said that was no problem. TODAY he calls (January 23) to tell me that he and I agreed to 30 days notice (I do not remember verbally agreeing to this nor have we ever signed any papers with him). I said that's fine, since we told him on Jan 5, we'd be out Feb 5 instead and pay him for those extra days.
Well, he said it didn't work like that. We'd have to be out for March 1. He said he will try to rent the place out before then so we can leave on Feb 1... he should have started looking for people to rent it RIGHT after we told him we were leaving.
I told him we'll be out Feb 1 anyways because I didn't want my unborn baby to be around the mold, even if we have to pay him rent and not live here.
I'm so upset. We told him at the very beginning of the month and yet he waits NINE days before we move to tell us that he's got a problem with it. Short notice or what? We're already packed and have the papers signed for the new place. I'm sooooo pissed off.
Am I being unreasonable????? It seems like everything has just been going to shit this month... |

I'm Currently Feeling: | Our landlord is like that too. I don't think he can do that because you have given him enough notice!! Why should you have to give him notice again. I would move out and not pay him anything extra. I'm pretty sure he can't make you, especially if you've not signed anything. |

I'm Currently Feeling: | that seems a bit irresponsible of him :/ hope he's not out to just earn some extra $$ off you guys until he can find someone to rent the place. At least he said he'd try to find a new renter quickly, but it still just seems odd that he needs a new client before he can fully let you guys move out...
what's the purpose of his 30 day notice policy? |

I'm Currently Feeling: | Grrr exactly! Giving him another months notice because we were 5 days off just seems so ridiculous. There isn't much we could've done anyways, he wasn't in town! |

what's the purpose of his 30 day notice policy? | I think his whole purpose is trying to get an extra month's rent out of us simply because he hasn't found a new tenant yet. I find it very doubtful he'll find one before then as well.
I think 30 days notice is just to allow him proper time to find a new tenant and get everything set up. Surely 26 days is enough? |

I'm Currently Feeling: | that definitely sounds like he's just looking for a few extra $$ because he was late on the jump to find a new tenant. i would stress to him firmly that you guys informed him on the 5th and therefore have until the 5th of february and no more. March 1st doesn't sound reasonable at all lol considering that is more than a month away :/
also, i would review your contract just to be sure about the policy, make sure there are no loop holes. |

We signed absolutely nothing when we moved in so that's why I'm a bit upset that he seems to think we can't leave on the 1st, especially because he had no problem with it earlier.
Legally, I don't think we owe him anything because there was no contract, verbal or written, stating we had to stay 30 days. |

I'm Currently Feeling: | When Brad got home I got him to phone the landlord and ask him what was going on. He gave it to our landlord straight and said that we will pay for the extra 5 days of February, but no more than that. He asked him why the landlord had told us at the beginning of the month that it was fine, but waited a week before our move to say otherwise but he had no response.
The good thing is, we'll be out between Feb 1 and 5th. Good thing for my DH, because I would've been too shy to put my foot down. Phew! |
