I have just found out that I am expecting my first baby in September. I have started looking into maternity leave and maternity pay and surely what I've read tonight can't be right!!
All I can find in my work contract is that I am due to 39 weeks paid leave - 6 of that is at 90% pay, and the rest at a government standard rate. When looking into the standard rate I'm terrifed to find that is only £112 a week! Which is probably around £400 a month. I have a mortgage to pay, bills to pay and a baby on the way - can someone please let me know if this is right!? How does anyone manage on that little money!
Thanks for that. If you don't mind me asking how are you managing on that?
If it wasn't for my husband earning good money, I wouldn't be managing on it! - The pay stinks really, our Mortgage alone is £ £996.99 a month - I don't know how people cope if their partner has a low income too, I really don't - but just remember there are monies you will become entitled to once baby is here.
For example Child Benefit (£72.40 PER MONTH FOR FIRST CHILD), Tax Credits etc......Most people earning under £50K a year are entitled to some tax credits.
its sooo rubbish isnt it! our mortgage is £920pm too plus bills etc. its a nightmare. same with me - if it wasnt for my husband working every second of the day doing overtime we would be screwed!!Gluck everyone! xx
Just double check that is what your company pay - I work for the NHS and we have quite a good maternity pay scheme. We also accrue annual leave whilst on mat leave so that's another option towards the end of your mat leave go onto annual leave. I know what you mean tho i want another job but the only reason i stay is because of the mat pay i couldn't live off SMP and i earn a lot more than my husband
Me and my o/h are at the moment trying for a baby, i've looked into the maternity at my work and i'm allowed up to 9months off.
The company give you 1K as a free gift for your first baby in a form of a cheque and then they add up the amount you would earn over that period of 9 months from normal salary to gov standard rate. They then divide by 9 and thats then your monthly wage! So i know its not the same for us compared to my normal wage, however its better then most. A few friends firms offer the same wage policy.
Might be worth consulting your HR department.
As if enough people ask if this is a possible route for the firm to take it might actually go in to practice.
Yep thats exactly right hun. Its ridiculus isnt it. I cant tell u how we cope 2pay rent, bills etc...I have no idea..its a real struggle, im not gonna lie to u. And my OH isnt on a good wage either, he earns less than £12,000 a year. But we DO get by, we dont have a choice in the matter. You'd be suprised. I dont know if you have a partner and if so how much he earns or anything but you could have a look into any further benifits you may be entitled to such as sure start maternity grant, tax credits and healthy start vouchers? Plus you will recieve child benifit when your LO arrives. Sorry im not much help hun. I guess unless ya well off, we're all pretty much in the same boat. We never got any help from the government x
