| Maternity Leave in Canada Not wishing to hijack Wobbles thread I thought I start new.
I noticed that in Florida u only 6 weeks @ 60% pay then have to be back after 12 weeks.
As we are thinking of emmigrating to Canada, we may want another baby, does anyone one know what the maternity is there?
Not too worried about the lenght of time 'cos I normally only off for 12-14 weeks ( and 3-4 weeks of that I use my annual leave), & I work up until lo arrives.
If maternity is really bad I may have no 4 in UK b4 we go (if we ever do!) | | | | Status: Offline

| Thank you hun, think we will wait and see what happens, all being well if things go to plan, will have v little mortgage, so that sort of pay will hopefully be manageable.
Hope u are keeping well, not long to go now. | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | ummm I'm afraid that I don't know all that much about the maternity leave here (not originally from Canada ) and I don't have a full-time job so it hasn't really come up. I do believe it is different for every province. I think in Ontario you have to be employed for a minimum of 3 months (again I think, not positive) before you qualify for mat leave. Mothers get 17 weeks of pregnancy leave (which can be taken before or after the baby is born) and 35 weeks of shared leave (between mother and father). This website should tell you a lot more than I can http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/...s/fs_preg.html
Good luck! | | | | Status: Online

This website should answer all your questions. You get a year. They split it up though so if the father wants to take it he can. So even though it says 17 weeks Maternity and 35 weeks Paternity...the mom can take the whole thing. And you get paid 55% of your insured earnings.....or a maximum of $423 a week. You also get the child tax benefit (which is calculated on your family income,) and you get the Universal Child Care benefit as well which is $100 per child a month. So I have 2 children so I get 2 cheques ever month...$200 for UCC, and another one that is just shy of $200 for my Child tax benefit. | | | | Status: Offline

| Thank you for the information its really helpful.
I am planning on coming over next summer to take exams at UUniversity of Waterloo, then hopefully it'll be a one month course the following Feb followed by licensing exams in March/ April 2009. Once I know if I've got on thre months course I will probably start applying for residency visa then or poss wait til I've done licensing exams. If they are still fast tracking I will then have residency visa within 12 months, if I get offered a job b4 then hopefully i'll be able to go on work permit, pending on selling house. It all seems incredibly complicated to co- ordinate but will hopefully all fall in place once we start the ball rolling. Gonna be stressful but worthwhile.
May not have baby no 4 after problems with SPD this time, may end getting pg before we go. What will be will be.
No doubt i'll be picking everyones brains at a later date on good places to live :0) | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | Just keep in mind that it takes a long time for permanent residency to be approved, especially if you do it from within Canada, and during that time you are not allowed to work in Canada. Not trying to be a downer, but I've been through it and it took me 15 months for the entire application to be processed and for me to become a landed immigrant. Of course I was doing the spousal class sponsorship so it was a little different. | | | | Status: Online

| At the moment for my occupation they're fast tracking the visa so they take 6 - 12 months as there such a shortage, hoping it will still be the same when the time comes to apply.
Knowing my luck it won't !
Forgot to add its Alberta that are fast tracking. | |
