Are your insurance policies one that pay you a sum at the end if you haven't claimed on them?

We're with Direct Line and pay £21 a month. We wont get any money unless we make a claim but it's quite a thorough policy where it covers for sickness and incapacity e.g if either of us was injured or had long term serious sickness then they pay us £x a month to cover the mortgage and bills and in the event of death it would pay a lump sum to clear the mortgage and have a wee bit in the bank for the surviving spouse or family.

If you make up your own will via an online 'kit' and have to get a lawyer to sign it off, would it not just cost you the same as if he/she had made it up in the first place?

Our lawyer did one for each of us free of charge because we were using his company when we bought our flat.

We are with the Halifax for life insurance - your cost will vary depending on your lifestyle choices i.e. do you smoke, do you regularly go handgliding or base jumping off skyscrapers etc etc
