I got all excited when i saw this thread! Im a essex girl born and breed! I was actually born in colchester, lived near there (mersea island) as a child and then moved to chelmsford. I love it here, lived in hertfordshire and London and always find myself back.

Its actually a misunderstood county, sure theres some white stillettos but doesnt every county!
Different parts of essex are very different, and also some are cheaper to live in than others, usually the rule of thumb is the nearer london the more expensive it gets.

Feel free to ask me any questions!

1- Chelmsford is more expensive than some area's, we have a 3 bedroom house and pay £850 a month, but beforehand I was in a 2 bedroom cottage and paid £620. I think Enfield is more expensive than chelmsford because its closer to london.

2-I have a lot of family from dagenham, romford area, Its changed a hell of a lot from when I remember it. I have a friend who lives in Enfield and my OH used to work there, just saying what she says, shes not a fan. But ive been there and there are some beautiful places.

3- what kind of things are you after? Ongar is lovely, bit pricey tho. I would recommend Chelmsford (but then its my home town!) its the capital of essex and has everything and easy access to london and offers a lot of jobs, or maybe colchester or braintree if your looking to go a bit further out, the rent goes further then, also the towns are nice.

Well its going to be OHs sister, and her OH and baby. My OH, maybe me and if i go obviously our baby too. So looking for a 3/4 bedroom house for around 900 ish.

Her OH has a job lined up already, but my OH cant remember where it is, so he's not much help!

I'm really not fussed about 'posh' areas, i live in a 'rough' area myself now and its really not that bad when you dont go out and get involved in it.

Guess i dont really know what else im looking for, was jus looking for ideas really. Sorry i'm being so vague!!
x

Woo hooo I didn't realise there were so many of us Essex girls on here!

I'm from Colchester too, still living here for my sins, despite 10 years away.

Personally, I think that Colchester is going way down hill, the town centre is rubbish, shopping is more or less a no no I now go to Ipswich shopping as Colchester has nothing. Price wise, as it is a big commuter town, you're money doesn't go too far, but further than it would closer to London.

OH and I both have friends and family here, if it weren't for them, I don't think we would be here.

I dream of a village life and there are some beautiful villages round here that I would happily move to (far too blooming expensive though, you can but a rabbit hutch for £220k). Alas, I am here!

I'm in Braintree, well until we move in 2 weeks anyway lol

We've been here for about 2 years. Its cheaper than Chelmsford but the shopping isn't great (I lived in Chelmsford for 21 years and got used to taking my pick when it came to shopping lol), do you drive?

Whilst looking for property to rent recently I did see some 3 bed houses in Braintree for £700pcm.

HTH
