Principal Resigns Over 'Intifada' T-Shirts AP

NEW YORK (Aug. 11) - An Arabic-themed public school will still open in September, despite the abrupt departure of its embattled principal, the city Department of Education said.
Debbie Almontaser resigned as principal of an Arab-themed public school in New York Friday after she was criticized for being part of group selling shirts imprinted with the words "Intifada NYC."
Almontaser said the word "intifada" was most commonly associated with the violent Palestinian uprising against the Israelis. "I don't believe the intention is to have any of that kind of (violence) in New York City," she said.
A stack of New York Posts sit at a newstand last month. A headline in the paper this week called Almontaser the "Intifada Principal." An editorial had the headline, "What's Arabic for 'Shut It Down'?"
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, here at a press conference on June 20, said on his radio show Friday that "she's certainly not a terrorist" but called Almontaser's resignation the "right thing to do."
