Staples (not so easy) - rant

I don't know where Staples think they get off saying "that was easy". I've never had an easy experience there.

I spent close to an hour today arguing with an employee there. I bought a Toshiba last summer for almost 1500 dollars, and when I bought it I was told that it wouldn't have to get sent away for repairs if anything happened because they could deal with it right on location (which was great because I spent 2 years losing my comp every few months for 4-6 weeks because it was crap and needed so many repairs).

On Saturday night, my power cord just completely stopped working. So its still under warranty, I went up to get it seen to. First of all, the guy had NO idea what he was doing. Literally. I was on the phone waiting with their warranty people for 15 minutes because I needed to get a claim number. After 15 minutes of listening to crappy telephone music, we finally figure out that its still under manufacturer's warranty so I didn't need to have wasted that time anyway because they couldn't do anything for me. That was fine.

So then he puts it all through the system, only to find out that they need to take my computer in with the adapter. I figured that was okay and that it should only be a few days because it was on site. Turns out, no - it wasn't on site, it had to be sent away. They couldn't just order a new adapter, they needed to send the whole computer away as well. Asked how long that would be and I get "oh anywhere from a week and 1/2 to 3 weeks".

I'm personally not willing to part with my computer for that long because I'm doing online courses. So I ask them if I could just scrap the warranty and just pay for a new power cord. "No we can't do that, because you ARE under warranty". The guy asked the manager and they said 'no you just can't do that, Toshiba won't sell it like that".

So I finally decide to take my computer back and alternate using my sisters charger for the next week 1/2 till my courses are over. I called Toshiba myself when I got home and asked them if I could get the power cord...what do I hear on the other line!? "Oh yes mam, we do have the power cord for that model notebook. It can be there tomorrow".

So now that that hour of my life was wasted...

How irritating. And also how odd, my power cord for my laptop just randomly completely stopped working on saturday night. But then yesterday and today it's working again. I'm saving for a new laptop though because mine's rubbish and it's only a matter of time before it goes again.

Wow, Rae.
In my current state, I probably would have gotten really violent with one of those big red "easy" buttons. Like maybe using the guy's head to push the button over and over?
We're allowed to do that when pregnant, right?

I am in IT and it winds me up when i have to log a hardware problem with our outside supplier and they try to talk me through troubleshooting the problem, even though i have already told them I'm an IT Engineer and i have already diagnosed what the issue is. Arhh I hate incompetent IT people in these stores who think they know what they are doing when they don't half the time.
I'm glad that Toshiba are going to send you a new AC Adapter, because yes it is total bull what Staples told you that they can't just send a new AC Adapter as they are a standard part, especially as you already know it is at fault as you used another one to charge it.
Computers...eh!!!

If i was you i would be writting to Toshiba and Staples head office and complaining that it is rediculous that you have to send the whole laptop away just for a dead AC adapter, stressing that you need the laptop for school. You might get a rebate cheque, might be worth giving it a go.
