nothing really, the first one is easier to use as you just guide the hair around teh spiral bit, but you have to do it to the shape thats on teh curler.
The second one means you have to spiral your hair yourself, its also better for if you want bigger lose curls or lots of tighter ones.
Also they seem to do them in all differnt mm, lik 13mm and 26mm etc, is that the barrel width? are some better for longer hair than others, cause Ihave some crap old ones that take a decade to heat, that are like the second pic, but cause my hair is so long, I can only get the bottom half of a section of hair on the curler!
Longer hair is heavy and if you use loose curls they may fall out, tighter curls will drop with time too, so not all styles will stay all day. I havve very long very thick hair and if i curl it using the tongs i tend to use tight ones in the morning, for looser curls in the evening.
