| Oh yeah maternity leave/pregnancy affects careers. How could it not? You take several months off from a job and there will be changes that you have to learn, promotions that you weren't around to receive, etc.
Pregnancy affects women getting jobs too although it's not supposed to. I can't say I blame employers for not wanting to hire a pregnant woman. You go through all the time and expense of hiring and training someone only to have them turn around and go on maternity leave a few months later - and you don't really know if they're going to come back after. My boss has admitted to asking women if they were pregnant because he was going into tax season and couldn't afford to have an employee taking maternity leave in the middle of it. |
