I'm Currently Feeling: | Thinking of becoming a tanker driver I'm sorry, but is it me?! I can't be the only one who finds the salary demands of the tanker drivers obscene!
They're already on £32k and have been offered 7% increase to take them up to £39k followed by 6% in January to take them up to £41.5k. And that's before any overtime or bonuses.
How can they not be happy with that kinda money!
Anyway at least I have my next career move sorted |

I'm Currently Feeling: | What? Of course they should!
Shell is an incredibly large company, who apparently is making profits of £1.3 billion a month!
These drivers have no seen a wage increase since 1992! Most companies do a yearly pay review for their employees.
Also, it's not like a brand new driver is going to be started on this salary, it's for long standing employees who have worked for the company for years and who have earned a pay increase.
The reason why they're asking for such a large increase, is because the work at least 1 45 hour week, making it comparable to approx 25k per year based on a 37.5 hour week.
So, why shouldn't they get it? |

I'm Currently Feeling: | Erm, they are paid by the government. How is a limited company's profits and salaries related to government ones? Obviously it'd be nice if a squaddie earned more than £14k a year start out, but then if the government made profits of £1.3 billion a month then I'm sure we would! |

| I agree that our soldiers should be paid far more, but I also believe that the tanker drivers should fight for their money. At the end of the day they are driving around in huge bombs and they are some of the most skilled lorry drivers out there. I think they deserve every penny. |

I'm Currently Feeling: | My brother drives a tanker for Shell
You have to bear in mind that it is a dangerous job and is getting more dangerous with all the strikes/petrol increases, there is now the added danger of being hijacked!! | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | You know I never thought that it might be dangerous and it really must be, so they do probably deserve it! I just really wish they'd bring the price of fuel/heating oil down its just rediculous!! |

I'm Currently Feeling: | It's not just a combination of driving flamable materials about; drivers have to drive under strict regime's whilst monitering their taco, considering their driving style to conserve fuel and also thinking about what the idiot in front of the idiot in front is going to do with his 38 tonne truck.
Like train drivers (who have to memorise approx 300 miles or more of track, signals, speed limits etc) these guys do a very difficult job.
Fair play to them.
MrBum used to be a train driver as well as a medical support driver before getting into IT... he can not only tell you a route after having been driven it just once, in the dark, whilst sleeping... but he can also tell you a good pub along the way, where to take a piddle when caught short and what every single pedestrian who was passed along the way was wearing... Seems like quite a skilled sort who do this driving malarky. |
