Are you the only maid?
Your role will vary depending on how traditional the wedding is... Traditionally the chief bridesmaid / maid of honour takes on a lot of resonsibility (helping the bride to make important decisions where needed, organise other bridesmaids, help address the invites, organise the hen night etc) and the bridesmaids simply need to be available for dress fittings, attend the hen night and help the chief bridesmaid when needed. However not many people follow tradition these days so your role may be anything from helping to arrange the wedding / hennight and getting the bride ready in the morning, to simply putting on a dress and turning up on the day!
These days it's best to ask the bride what will be expected of your really, to avoid any confusion
