Crikey - I didn't realise so many countires were just as effected by the rising cost of food. Here in the UK it's got really bad this year, in fact it's depressing! We have our 'normal' stores, but we also have some european type stores with real BUDGET priced food, but it's brands we aren't used to 'normally' BUT have to say a lot of it is really nice (German meats and cheeses etc), so I'll do half my shop there (Aldi, Lidl, Netto....poundsaver even).

I find I cant shop in once place any more! Does anybody make their own bread (breadmaker??) - helps cut costs. I've even started growing my own herbs and veg this year!!!! Yikes.

Safeway? Wierd, all Safeways got took over here - good old safeways.

We go to an off brand store for a lot of our stuff but I refuse to buy meat and most vegetables there (and cheese too).....we have tried it in the past but it's just not good quality. So our shopping consists of at least three stores to get it all done. We tend to shop sales and are lucky that we live in Toronto and have access to cheap fresh fruits and veggies in several of the local markets (Chinatown etc.). We haven't really noticed an increase in our bill yet....we'll see how I fare today though!

I love Lidl!!! We have a street market every weekend where I live and I get a lot of fruits and veggies from there. I was growing my own stuff for years, but not this year.

As for Safeways - I am surprised, as well. However, I grew up with Woolworths in the U.S., but they got closed down. I was surprised when I came here and saw they were still running. I think some chains just change the country where they operate.

We now have our own breadmaker and are growing our own tomotoes, strawberries, herbs and potatoes. Food is so extortionate now thats its rediculous.

How do they expect people to live..... Its nuts.... We try to buy things on sale and I try to cook in bulk when ever possible.... But it really adds up...

yeah Vickie... that meat is for our dogs. They eat better than we do at times But its the diet we chose for them... Real meat, boiled and then chopped and added the the dry food... So we have to buy whats on sale....

I am just shocked how much I had to spend on a 1/2 gal of milk... That wasnt even a full gallon....

Use to shop @ lidl until my tub of colesaw contained hairs!

prices of food is outragous when I do my tesco online shopping I get to say £70+ and think I have loads then submit and see my dinky order its the only way I can budget with food if I go out shopping its outragous!

Brought up somewhere else was the price of oil for cooking ...... MADNESS!

You get all this stuff thrown in your face to live healthy to go with organic & so on well that just gets worse £$! We did a dietting plan once did a shop and came out with a couple of bags with a big £$ total at the end of our receipt!

None of it is realistic!

That's really bad for just half a gallon, I think we pay 3.99 for 4 litres. When I first got here though I was shocked at the prices, they were so much higher than what I'd been paying in Texas, but with the downturn of the US economy it's becoming more and more on par with what we already pay here I think. I'm hoping prices here don't go up too much!
