when i got scampi at age 13 (nine years ago) I lived in a flat and the cats protection told me if i ever let him out he should not get out for the first 2-3 weeks of arrival as he needs to get familiar with his new environment. So if you do let them out, keep them in for a 3 weeks first and then let them out.

I actually let scampi out just over a year ago for the first time (he was almost 21 then) and he seemed to have a fab time! I am so glad he spent his last year outside and not stuck indoors. he never went far and almost found his way back - so if he can do it, yours will be able to.

Good luck

Christine

My cat is an indoor cat and never went out - she was so scared of even an open window! Then we moved and within a couple of days she was interested in going out. We let her out after a fortnight and she just pootled round the garden. Now, 18 months later, she still goes out, but only in the garden.
Cats only stay in their comfort zone, so don't worry, they will be happy whatever they decide to do!!!

Well keep your kitty in for the first little while and just gradually let her out. make sure that she is collared and tagged and liscensed though. you wouldn't want animal control to take her and slap you with a fine..

We only let our cats outside once they were fixed. When we moved they were scared to go outside but when they did go out they would just walk around the deck and garden. now they are off pissing our neighbors off lol climbing trees, chasing birds and bugs, rolling around in dirt.. doing all the best things that cats do

I have to agree. Keep it locked and get your cats use to the new place.... maybe take them out supervised so they can sniff and stuff.... then slowly let them explore.

It is so that they can follow their footprints home. You could also use ink i suppose...

I think the butter on their feet is so they sit licking it off for hours and by then they feel more at home.

I learnt this from Topsie and Tim...
