Unhappy

Moving and leaving pets behind :(

We got some bad news at the vet today.

Here's the story.. I decided in April to move back to the UK after 4 years in Switzerland and France, it's for a number of reasons, we were actually planning on going straight to Spain and then I just suddenly realised I really needed to spend time in the UK.

Anyway, I have a bunny rabbit and a cat. We found out that rabbits are classed as rodents, so she'd be put in quarantine for 6 months. I think that would be cruel and doubt she'd survive, so we knew we had to find a new home for her.

Well, today DH took my cat (who we rescued in October) to the vet. I had already made sure that all his vaccinations for travel in the EU were up to date, he has his passport, we just needed to get his chip transferred into our name from the charity we got him from. So the vet confirmed he was all clear to travel, until DH mentioned the UK and he said "ohh, the UK, well that's a problem". Turns out although the UK is in the EU, they have different rules. Cats and dogs have to have two blood tests that they wait 6 months for the results before they can enter the UK. I'm sure it's to safeguard our wildlife but it's so unfair because I thought I was doing everything right

I'm going to miss my poor furbaby so much Trying to find someone to look after him for 6 months. It seems it's easier for the world's terrorists to get in than my pets!!

That's awful, I'd be very upset if I had to give either of my fur babies up, even if it was just a temporary thing.

And he's such a sweet little thing that I think that anyone who had him for 6 months would want to keep him!! He loves to be held and falls asleep on me, so I carry him around.. ok, I induldge him, I just hope I can find someone who's as big a softie as me!

Poor you, that must be tough. We've got 2 cats (rescued 6 years ago) and we are complete softies with them and even hate leaving them for a week's holiday!

I hope you find a good six month holiday home for him - I'm sure you will. There are lots of us around who love puddy tats - if I was there I'd offer!

Good luck and loads of

i'm sorry to read this

i totally understand how you feel. when my cat was alive i HATED leaving him anywhere and was constanlty worried about him.

Is it possible to put him into a nice cattery for the six months with big pens where he can have some outdoor access? Some catteries are really nice with really caring cat people running them. Or is it possible to contact a charity to foster him out until you can get him back (and you pay for his upkeep). I am certain there is a solution as it would be awful if you had to give your moggie away permanently.

I hope everything works out okay for you.

p.s. yes, it is easier for terrorists to enter the uk than our fur babies...

It's such a shame but I agree with you about your rabbit. 6 months is such a long time out of their life that it doesn't seem worth it.

Thanks for your lovely messages. I think we may have found somewhere for Charlie bunny, a colleague at work has a daughter who already has 2 bunnies and they have a whole garden fenced in to play in!! So they're going to take her for a few days and see how she gets on with the other two.

As for Ziggy, well, I'm not sure if they have catteries that are nice here, but I'll look into it. A guy at work seemed quite interested but he said he'd have to speak to his wife.. thing is they already have a baby and a toddler so she might not be too keen.

I just feel like such a biatch for not checking all the rules out earlier.
