I want to change my first name, which is Nicola because quite frankly I hate it. I don't mind getting called Nic, but inevitably people always end up calling me Nicola.

So, after my husband said I should change my name, I need suggestions. I can't have any name that ends in a hard y sound as it won't go with my surname.

I'm planning on using it for a year or so before deciding to change it by deed poll.

Any suggestions?

I don't think you need to got through deed poll for a first name, you can add additional first names willy nilly.
