I'm a sucker for not going shopping. We try to do a monthly shop and then top up with bread and milk but all we ever really seem to do is by crap once a month and buy bread and milk constantly... the local chippy is my best friend these days

I'm sure it'll change when the LO comes, i will HAVE to do some serious budget shopping

xx

I guess a lot depends on what you buy, since everyone is different. We buy a lot of boxed/canned goods and buy those in bulk so we only buy once a month. With meat we buy big packages and split it up in freezer bags so our freezer is stocked for a month (or longer depending on the sales). For fresh veggies we do buy those once a week, but DH works close to Chinatown so he just walks up there during his break and picks up whatever fresh veggies we may need. We do go to the store about once a week for milk/bread/fresh fruit etc.

We're really lucky to have a big farmers market type thing literally down the road (about a minutes drive away ). The price of food there is the same if not cheaper than the supermarket and we can buy all our meat, fish, fruit, veg and bread there.

We tend to do a big shop once a month on pay day at the supermarket for things like cat and dog food, washing powder, ketchup and stuff like that. We then go to the shop at the end of the road at least three times a week (sometimes more) and buy all our food fresh.

We're planning on getting a little freezer when LO arrives so we can plan ahead a bit more.

xx

My DH burns soup if he does cook something hot, he needs to be supervised.

i cook mostly from scratch and i suppose that is my fault DH can't make something on his own but i found it so much cheaper to do it from scratch than the box meals, canned goods etc. I used to go that route but switched and my grocery trips have been about $30-$40 cheaper! Not to mention i could cook large portions when cooking from scratch so we have leftovers the next day.

Now the buying meat in bulk thing and freezing it...that's something i need to get into! As of now i usually go and buy 2-3 types of meat (maybe chicken, beef, porkchops, or ham) and use is sparingly for 2-3 weeks. It would be nice to get one big hulking cut of meat that'll last a long time. I've started using 1/2lbs of ground beef rather than a full pound etc for meals.

Now i am just rambling! as you can see, i am a big grocery fanatic i also do coupons when grocery shopping and save about $20 a trip depending what i buy.

I do the 1/2 pound of hamburger meat too........we used to use a pound but once for some reason we only had 1/2 a pound and it worked out really well and saves so much money. We've even gotten to were a lot of times we will just eat one piece of pork or steak between the two of us. Made our groceries last so much longer!

And good for you for cooking for scratch! I must admit I don't have that kind of patience
