I find it very ironic that he never wanted daughters and yet it was a daughter who became one of the greatest Queen's...not a son. Also ironic that his only living son died at the age of 15, shortly after taking the throne.

Yes, and Elizabeth was the SPIT of Anne and Henry! Funny, also, that she never married...I read an interesting article suggesting that she'd formed some pretty strong opinions on marriage based on her fathers own slightly different approach.

Although she was relatively quiet about Anne in public, the Boleyn family enjoyed prominence under Elizabeth - and she always wore a ring which had enamelled portraits of Anne (and her, I think)

She had a great relationship with Henry - but how odd it must have been to know that your father essentially killed your mother and uncle and destroyed their reputation?

Ohh I'm really loving this thread!

I always find it ironic in terms of Henry wanting a son yet his greatest assest was the daughter he never wanted

And then the 3rd wife he loved the best (supposedly) and gave him a son, died shortly after giving birth. Karma was seriously after him!!

I have always been fascinated by Anne Boleyn.

I used to work at the The Tower a long time ago when I was a student and used to live not far from Hever in Edenbridge which is a lovely place to live.

The thing is since I have become a Mother, my heart goes increasingly out to Catherine of Aragon and how she suffered. Married for many many years and cast aside for a woman, who I don't think we would actually have liked very much. She was also estranged from her daughter Mary for five years until she died. Heartbreaking.

I agree...being away from her daughter for that long had to have been heartbreaking, and in my opinion contributed to the death of Katherine and was the cause of a variety of Mary's illnesses. Katherine and Mary were treated very unfairly. Although, according to a few books I have read, Mary was no saint either and even had her half sister imprisoned at the tower, but considering what she went through during her childhood, it's understandable....maybe not necessarily acceptable or excusable...but understandable.

She was a very angry woman IMO....too bad they didn't have therapists back then.

How lucky were you to work at the tower!! Do you have any good pictures?

Yes, Katherine suffered hugely - I always had a soft-spot for her, but I recently read a book suggesting she was exceedingly stubborn, cruel (war against Scotland) and hard. Either way, to be separated from her daughter can only be described as utterly hideous. That said, Henry managed to do that to Anne and Elizabeth, also.

How amaaaaaaaazing to work at the Tower, it's such a beautiful building. I'd love to have designed it!

I suppose Henry could never quite understand his lack of male offspring - after all his father had two sons, and his grandfather (maternal) had several. The pressure on those poor women to produce a boy.
