Each to their own but I personally never leave Olivia alone or out of my sight (except when she takes a nap in her cot), if I move out of a room in the house she comes with me even if I am only going for a second. I always take her out of the car, even if paying for petrol and if she is asleep.

When she is taking a nap in her cot, I have a movement sensor monitor on at all times and I keep the other monitor with me.

I leave Brooke in the car locked if i have to quickly do something as long as the car is in sight.

If your child is strapped safely into their seat and the car is locked or even deadlocked the chances of anything happening are extremely low, yes freak accidents do happen but the odds are so low that im happy to leave her for 2 minutes.

exactly...

yes, i could take my LO with me, but I am more likely to be hit by a car crossing the road than a car hitting my parked car!! and if we are gonna get hit, i would rather my LO be in the safety of my car than bouncing down the road in her car seat!!

That said, I only leave her in the car alone at petrol stations and Tesco anyway. if i need something from the shop i take her in with me! But i dont critisise other parents for doing it (unless its something silly like 15 mins of course)!!

Its like one of the PP's here who said about a car bursting into flames, the odds on that happening are ridiculous, ive worked in the motor trade for 5 years, i see roughly 30 cars a day ... ive seen a minor fire on one car, do the maths?

Im pretty confident in saying that i will bet Aly has seen it happen once if any, as i know she works in the motor trade aswell.

Im not picking at the PP for what she said but im just using it as an example. I would never ever leave Brooke if i felt she could be in danger, i know they are our children and we worry about them. but sometimes i think the way society is today, understandably we overthink situations.

I was actually going to start a thread about this the other day because I argue with OH about it all the time. I don't drive but I know that I will never feel comfortable with leaving Seren in the car on her own, the thought just makes my blood run cold. I'd rather get her out and put her in her buggy or just carry her to wherever I need to go.
OH thinks differently, he leaves her in the car when he gets petrol (and goes into the petrol station) and he'll leave her in the locked car when he goes to the cash point etc. I go mental whenever he does this, but he thinks I'm being irrational and "mental" in his words Each to their own but I could never do it.

nope, i've never seen it happen. I would ask my more 'weathered' colleagues if they have ever known it to happen, but im not at work, but you could probably count on one hand the number of times if anyone has known it to happen (and seen the results first hand)!! I do know it can happen though (peugeot had a problem at one point with a batch of cars where something in the engine bay was catching fire), but its not like the whole car goes up at once. it usually starts in the engine bay!!
There is more chance of having an accident whilst driving due to poor maintenance of the vehicle, but we are all happy to get into a car without checking basic things like tyre pressures, tyre tread, brake fluid level etc etc each time!!

its each to their own really. i dont think parents who take their kids out each time are over-protective, and i dont think parents who leave their kids locked in the car for a couple of mins are irresponsible or neglectful!! everyone has their own methods...

Dont see anything wrong with it , all mums do it here to drop there children off at nursery? all they have to do is whip there jackets off , boots and bag on the hook. Then back out to the car!

I guess it depends on what type of area you live in? We live in a safe place so i guess people dont feel threatend to do this.

This is quite right - it is mainly to do with the location. To be honest this is one of those issues where it is very difficult to generalise and say it is good or bad in all cases. It depends on the area, the proximity of the car to the shop/nursery/petrol station, the visibility of the car, the safety of the location where it is parked, who else is around etc etc. Some situations will be safe but for the one in a million freak accidents that could not be predicted, other situations will be risky because of the area etc.

People have to make a judgement based on the particular circumstances - and trust that others will not criticise them based on a generalisation.

I live in one of the safest locations in the country and I wouldn't leave her in the car if I couldn't see her at all times x
