rented a property through agent and not told them about pets?

Hi

i havent done this i am just asking. has anyone ever rented a property through an agent and not told them about having pets?

i have been trying to find a privately rented property as the private landlords dont seem to go crazy with the damage deposits when they know you have pets. some agents have asked for damamge deposits of £1000 because we have dogs and we just cant afford it.

i mean my dogs are well behaved and walked regularly. anyway i am struggling to find a private property as there seem to be bugger all advertised. have you ever rented a property through an agent and not told them about your cat/dog? if so did they find out?

thanks

My friend has been renting, she has had a cat & dog but has not been caught. I guess when the landlord/lady pops round you will have to put them upstairs, lmao. I think the damage deposit is more to do with estate agents being greedy.....

yeah, but i had a gerbil not dogs so a bit different, when they came to inspect the property i would just take the gerbil to someones house until they were done! That said i dont think its fair to do that with a dog as they are much bigger & messier & smellier! I would not want to rent my property generally to someone who had dogs so i can see why it would be harder to find somewhere but its would be impossible imo to hide the fact you had dogs from the agency when they came to inspect, if i go in a house where someone has dogs i can always smell it - thats no reflection on the people or house they are really clean but dogs do leave a 'certain' smell and you could end up in lots of trouble

my LL knows but i would be very careful they will find out, when you need repairs to be done and the house smells of dog, there dog hairs about no mater how much you hoover ect. To us dog owners our houses dont smell of dog but to people who dont have dogs they do.

Also if they ask and you dont tell them you have lied to get a property which i believe is obtaining though deception (sp?) and braking your contract.

If i was a LL and had a good reason for not wanting a dog in my house i would be very very peeved if my T got a dog with out asking ect.

and i can bet once they find out and you leave you wont see your deposit again, it will go on Pro cleaners to get rid of the smell of dog and the dog hairs ect

Adivce i was given was to look for propertys that had been up for a couple of months, LL more likely to cave to having a pet because they need the rent money or offer an extra £100 deposit as a kind of "pet protection"

We private rent and have not long got a kitten. Tbh we never even checked if we were allowed pets or not!

After being here over a year we have not once had a visit from our landlord! This I think is strange as in our previous flat we had a visit at least 4 times a year! We must be lucky as the only contact with have with our landlord is over the odd phone call when something needs repairing (we've had the washing machine, boiler and downstairs toilet repaired in the time we've been here). We just give them a quick call and it's done no questions asked!

Our house is unfurnished and all furniture (bar white goods) is our own so I guess in our case any damage caused by 'Dora' the kitty would be at our own expense as it's our furniture in the first place, maybe that makes a difference when it comes to renting and pets?

thanks ladies

its really not something i want to do i like to be honest but i am just getting so stressed about our living situation and we really need a house. i know its my own fault living in a flat with dogs and falling pregnant and i should of thought about it but i didnt and its done now. i need a house so we have a back garden to let the dogs out to the toilet instead of me having to leave my baby in the flat whilst i take the dogs down 2 flights of stairs which is so dangerous and i REALLY dont want to do it. really dont want to get rid of the dogs either as they are my little babies and because the breed is hardwork i am worried they will go to someone who cant be bothered and they wil end up in the dogs trust it breaks my heart to think that.

i guess all i can do it try and continue to look for a private property where they let you have dogs. we have one which we really want but the guy who owns it is messing us around and he works abroad so he is taking a week to respond to any emails etc and i just cant wait around for the next 6 weeks for his to pull his finger out

anyway sorry for waffling thanks for your input ladies xx

I wouldnt do it if they find out they can kick you out without any notice because you broke the contract first by having pets in the house without permission and then you could find yourself homeless with dogs and a baby.

We've rented this house for over a year & half, and we've got a dog even tho it says on our contract "no pets" but we've only seen our landlord twice, 1st when we moved in and then 3 months after we moved in when he came to fix the cooker(we didnt have a dog then) but his sister in law lives nextdoor to us and she's known we've had a dog for a good year and our landlords often at her house and nothings been said, so he either doesn't kno or he does know and just isnt bothred.. but we haven't been caught yet lol. i can understand why landlords dont allow pets but if you have a clean house and the pet hasn't destroyed/chewed any part of the house, i think then its okay to have a dog but aslong as your prepared to replace or pay to get the damage replaced before you move out.. but i supose some people still don't see that as being okay :S

I would be careful as they could get mardy over it. I can see why some say no pets as our flat obv had a cat and dog in it before we moved in as even with the carpet being removed and us scrubbing the floor you could still smell cat wee in places, and the door frames had scratches all over them.
