any tips for finding a privately rented house?

Hi

i am trying to find a house to rent but not wanting to use an agent. i find they are trying to charge crazy damage deposits and we are worried they will turn us down because dh contract for work ends in may. they are keeping him on but wont confirm it until may.

anyone have any tips? all the properties on rightmove and other property sites are letting agents and i just cant seem to find many private landlords advertising. x

Honestly, i would go through an agent. Yes it is a little more expensive but they act on your behalf not just for the landlord.

If something goes wrong in the house you could be waiting a few hours if not days for the landlord to ring you back where as with an agency you can get hold of some one 24/7.

We rent privately and have found our last 3 rental properties on gumtree.com. We can't complain, haven't had any problems so far and don't have to pay the extortionate letting agent fees which I think I would resent paying if I had to now. It's very much luck of the draw I guess but we've been lucky three times in a row now All the best, hope you find something suitable. xx

this is the thing some of them charge crazy fees around here. some charge £150 per person applicant fee, then they want deposits of over a grand because we have dogs and a months rent in advance. we would have to find about 2k up front and we do not have that kind of money.

think i will continue to keep an eye on gumtree.com

thanks ladies xx

DH and I have rented privately for the last 5 years and lived in 5 different places, the moves always brought on ourselves for different reasons. Personally I would never rent through an agent as the fees are ridiculous, plus they run credit checks and I have a CCJ.

Your local paper should run a property section once a week, ours usually has 2 pages of private rentals on top of pages agents ads. Also, check the windows of newsagents and post offices in the areas you want to move into.
