whats the right age to bring home a puppy ...your views

iam on a yorkshire terrier forum and its 9/10 americans and they said over in american dog breeders wont let you take the pup untill after its 12 weeks sometimes 16 weeks.

so someone put up a thread about how she was gettin a puppy which will be nearly 8 weeks old and everyone attacked her saying its way too young to bring home a puppy and that it will mess up its development if you take it before 12 to 16 weeks.

i felt sorry for this girl because she wanted nice comments and all she got was a beating so i chipped in and put my 2 cents in and explained i got my dog at 7 weeks and had no problems at all she eat and drank, played, brarked, and was very social.

i also mensioned how in my view leaving the puppy with its mother and littermates would make more of a bound which the longer you leave will become more stressful when the puppy has to leave iam i right???

i mean one women said 4 months i just dont see the point of a puppy staying this long with its mum

anyway i would like your views and please i dont mind tell me if you think iam in the wrong or in the right

i think 8 weeks minimum but would think 12 is better.

8 weeks is very young to be taken away from your mum and be thrust in some completly ned enviroment.

It must be horrible for puppies being torn away from there mummys like they do.

My dog was 8 weeks when we got him and has grown up to be a very stable sensible chap. I think leaving them for longer has its benefits, playing with litter mates means that puppies learn how hard to play bite without causing pain as a litter mate will soon let them know if they've gone too far. Also the mother teaches the babies manners. However, I know that often the mother has had enough of her puppies as they get older, bombarding her and chewing on her nipples. How long would dogs stay with their mothers in the wild? I'd say 10 weeks would probably be ideal. just my opinion.

Think its 8-12 weeks depending on the breed. I think its a bit cruel to take a puppy away too soon I got my dog at 14 weeks.

I think my dog was almost 7wks when I got him? but apparently him and his litter mates were not being fed by the mother as her nipples were sore & she was refusing to let them suckle xx
