Can someone tell me what the Mutley area in Plymouth is like?

I would be really grateful if there is anyone on here that could tell me what the Mutley area in Plymouth is like?

I have found a property on Lisson grove that I would like to rent. I live in London and have only been to Plymouth once on holiday in August.

I am moving to Plymouth on the 1st of March and this property is available for me and OH but I wanted to get abit of info on the area before I accepted it.

Please could you tell me if the area/road has a bad reputation? isit far from city centre etc??

Thanks x

Mutley is very close to the city centre!!

I lived in Mutley for three years and never had any problems (moved out six years ago though). You have an awful lot of students in the area and I wouldn't say it is the best area of the city but it is far from the worst.

Mutley Plain itself (the Main street) in Mutley is filled with shops and bars/pubs and resturants/takeaways. So it can be really manic on a weekend night because there is something like 12 different pubs on the street!!

Most buses in the city pass through Mutley Plain so it is great for travelling around.

Lisson Grove is a mix of houses. Student houseshares, big houses converted into flats and family homes.

I am really grateful you replied to my thread and the information you have given me is REALLY helpful thank you. Obviously Plymouth and London are TOTALLY different but I know the good areas - the bad areas, the posh areas - the poor areas in London! So its good to know what that particular area is like from someone that knows the area.

I am only 19 but NOT a student. OH is 21 and will be working at the blues bar and grill as his cousin is the head chef (I don't know what reputation it has ) but thats why we are moving.

I havent found work yet so I will be on my own whilst OH is at work, Until I find a job of course. I wanted to know if walking to Mutley plain....by myself to the local shop etc. would be safe? I'm sorry to ask so many questions and pester you.

Oh the property is a 6 bed house with 2 bathrooms. Its £280 a month for a room ncluding bills (again ALOT cheaper than anything in London - but don't wanna be scammed if thats classed as expensive for the area?!) this is just until we find our feet and money etc is sorted!

Thanks again you have really helped xx

The Blues Bar and Grill is amazing!!! Very popular in Plymouth and its always busy!

You'll be fine on Mutley Plain alone. Only time I would be a bit cautious is late on Friday or Saturday night because there are so many people out drinking. There are two small supermarkets on Mutley Plain itself, Somerfield and Co-op and I used to walk to them all the time on my own. Plus it is only a 10/15 minute walk into the city centre.

The rent is about right. Even on the cheap side I would say. 6 years ago I was paying £350 a month for a small one bed flat and bills on top.

I'd say being so young that Mutley will be perfect for you. Everyone I know has lived in Mutley at some point in their lives!! I only left because we wanted a quieter life in the suburbs!

Any other questions just shout!
