Your area may be different but in our area I can say with certainty that you would never get a house if you could manage in your current accommodation, and if you were offered something then it would be a 2 bed, maximum. We also do not have the right to buy scheme still operating.
Would it not be a better, more secure long-term option to look at one of the shard ownership or assisted-purchase schemes if there is anything like that in your area?

Yes I was very lucky because my eldest is only 5 but yet we have seperate bedrooms, They said they did not want to put me in a 2 bed permanent only to have to move me again so I ws told to only apply for 3 bed.

I am lucky to have a good council here in the national park, no tower blocks or anything so I am very lucky to live in a national park right on the coast in a council house.
I think some people forget that if you work you still habe to rent though although its only half of the other houses in my street!

You CAN get a council house even if you can afford to rent. My ex mum and step dad both worked full time they applied for a council house in 2002 and got one last year even though they both still work.

Have you considered going to auction instead?

I would make an appointment with an advisor at the council if I were you, as you can see from all the replies it varies greatly.

In my area you can not get a council home bigger than what you need, you need would be classed as 2 bedrooms. The AVERAGE wait here is 10 years, so yours would be quite a bit longer than that imo. But i know other parts of the country the average wait is 2 years.

Sorry but I havent read all the comments so if its already been said I am sorry.

Your council is most likely to not acknowledge you to be honest. You have a property, so your not homeless, being made homeless or needing accomodation.

I have been waiting since October for a place and still have had no luck. I am with my mum and dad currently and I need to move soon. My girls are now 1 and we are desperate. It would take you years.

You cant buy a council property unless you have been living in it for 10 years anyway! and by then surely you could already own your own home!

Its not all roses with the council, The places I have been to see need tons of work done to it or are in not so great locations!

I am only allowed to bid on 1 or 2 bedroom properties! No bigger.. I think things vary per council but its the same on one scale. your not in need of a place because you have one

To the post right at the very top! (in bold) Me and my OH work and we still cant afford one of those rent to buy schemes. you need a deposit of at least £10,000 to start with!

Hey hun, we have just been given a council house in rotherham. Theres just the three of us, me, OH and Jack, and we could apply for either a 2 or 3 bed house. I held out for a 3 bed and got one. We were on priority list and it took 11 months to get the house. For general category it could be upto 10 years depending where u want to live. So get ur name down now!! Good luck x
