I hate to burst your bubble hun but even if you get a council house anyone whos tenancy started after 2008 no longer has the right to buy as the government has put a stop to it as the social housing stock has got so low as so many people have bought their council house.

In the situation I've been in, I can say for CERTAIN that you either won't get a council house or you'll be waiting most if not all of your life to get one!

You either have to be pregnant/with a child and homeless, or you have to be disabled - mentally or physically or have some extra special emergency situation.

You'll be right at the bottom of the pile, amongst the god knows how many others who are also at the bottom of the pile, and there will be a constant rotation of people above you who have "priority needs." The number of people above you will NEVER decrease, in fact it'll probably just increase so your case will never get looked at.

xx

Id say you will be waiting around 8-10 years. You wont be givin a 3 bed nowadays you need to have 6 people in a household to be able to qaulify for a 3 bed.
Best bet is to carry on privatly renting and later on gt a mortage on a house.
Waiting for a council house isnt really worth it if your not in need of it

When i went on the list 6 yrs ago, i was told there was nearly 2000 people in my area in desperate need. Luckily due to my circumstances at the time i managed after months of sleeping on a friends sofa ( heavily pregnant) and homeless hostel i was housed.
The number in my area has risen drastically, and i know a lot of people desperate for bigger accomodation.
Have you tried seeing if you can get help towards your rent? I know sometimes if you are on low income you can get help x

to be honest its not worth it hun buy the time you would get a council house you could prob have saved a nice deposit for a house. Round here you would be waiting years and would never get a bigger house then you need. Me and oh dont get a council house because he works and his parents have a big enough house for us to move into so even if our LL makes us homeless council could still say to us to live with the Oh's Parents

It is just an option for us as our rent is pretty high and we do struggle a little sometimes...so if we put our names down they might come up with something for us in a few years.

Im not complaining about the waiting list,i dont mind that we will be well down the list...my question was how long do you think?...just curious.

But now...im thinking twice on asking a question as i never get involved in arguments on here and it seems that people are going to think im selfish...
You didn't offend me at all :-)

Thanks for the advice girls.

The only reason i considered putting my name down was because i was speaking to lady from the council on the phone about housing benefit and she sent me the forms to apply as she was sure i was entitled to something. But then she also said put your name down if you like too as you could get a house if you do struggle.

I never thought i could before

She was also telling me about the right to buy scheme too saying it was still possible but if the goverment have stopped it then she must have been talking out of her backside

Like i said,we are ok renting atm but our income is low and we will struggle if we dont qualify for housing benefit. The only reason we manage now is because i get MA allowance but that stops very soon xx

I am sure the right to buy still exists, so I think she was right and if you get one you can..eventually!!

Here is the info link from the government site
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndC...mes/DG_4001398

It says ''If you have been a secure council tenant for at least two years (or five years if you became a tenant after 18 January 2005) you are likely to have the Right to Buy your council home at a discount''

Maybe its just my area then but in the new tenancy agreement we got sent it says we only have the right to buy if our tenancy started before 2008. Also in my area you only get a 3 year tenancy now and then they re-evaluate if you still need a council house and if you don't they help you find private accommodation. I think its just because they have over 10,000 people on the waiting list in my area!
