Definitely sounds like tummy upset. Try the walk later and see if you can get him to poo and what that looks like. Monitor his urine output, too. Drinking more than usual can be a sign that they ate or drank something bad. If he is drinking more, he should be peeing more, too. If he is drinking, but not peeing, that can be really bad. It might be a sign of having eaten or drank something that is causing kidney problems (like antifreeze).

More than likely, he just ate something silly and will getting back to normal tomorrow. But if he still isn't interested in food tomorrow, then ring the vet!

Have to say I probably wouldn't be watching and waiting in this situation, if he has eaten something and there is a blockage then a few more hours of waiting could be fatal. Have you checked his gums (when you press them gently do they return to pink immediately?). The signs he is displaying could also indicate ingesting something toxic like slug pellets or similar, and again this will be fatal if left.
I don't want to scare you, but if you are questioning whether you should be at the vets then you probably should. Some dogs are stoical and will not truly show thier pain.
If you don't go to the vets, I would ensure he sleeps in the same room as you tonight so you can keep a close eye on him.

He actually seems to have picked up a bit in the last hour or so. He is getting up to a bit of mischief and watching 'One man & his dog' on tv, which I can assume only means he feels better?

Max ate carpet underlay stuff over the summer and was really sick, so I know the signs to look for. He hasn't eaten yet but he is drinking and going outside to pee so I'll try him again with some food and hope he eats that. I think a walk will do him good too but I just need my darned OH to come home from work!

Colitis is possible, but not likely at this point.

TBH, beagles are NORTORIOUS for eating things they shouldn't. I know first hand as I have one. She's forever finding things to get into and stuffing herself full to the point where she makes herself ill in just this manner. I try to dog proof everything, but he is amazing in her ability to get to things! That nose can sniff out ANYthing from miles around... and she can (at 13 yo with arthritis) jump on boxes, counters, climb, and otherwise worm her way to places a cat won't bother trying.
